I have a Tyan Tiger MP motherboard with 2 AMD Athlon MP 1600+, which are currently installed with Dynatron Delta 38CFM fans, and make lots of noise ! (60-70dBA) ya, I know on their site it says says 45dBA, but.. [EG] I guess it depends on distance you measure it from.
I just got 2 Thermaltake's Volcano 6Cus, but before installing them I have these questions:
1. Volcanos seem to weight considerably more than Dynatron's. However, I heard they are considerably more quiet also. However, I am wondering if the motherboard will handle the weight. It's 2 heatsinks afterall. They seem pretty massive too... I wouldn't wanna be hit by one of those, hehe
2. Are Volcanos really quiet ? Or are there quieter ones ? Or is it if I want quieter once, I will have to trade considerable performance for it ? Or do I still have some lee-way ?
3. There are thermal pads on Volcanos, I guess it's best to scrape them off and use a thermal compound. How can I scrape it off safely ?
thanks!

2) Volcanos are statistically quieter than Deltas, I've never owned a Delta so I can't give you a personal comparison but I've talked to people who have used both and they agree with the stats, Volcano 7k fans are somewhat loud instead of really loud like Deltas.
3) With a crowbar or battle axe. Don't get me wrong, I love my Volcano 6cu+, but the bottom of mine was so rough I lapped it for well over an hour and still I can see some feint machining lines in it. It doesn't matter what you scrape the crap off with, if it's like mine you're going to have to lap it anyway.

if you use a plastic card to scrape the gunk off it dosn't leave a mark, no point here though
