I'm looking at getting my first laptop. I saw that they are going to have this at BestBuy on Blackfriday for $379
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8045162&ref=39&loc=01&type=product&cp=1&id=1158317339111

I noticed it has a Core Solo @ 1.86ghz. I don't know much between some of the late P4's and the new Core 2 Duo's and I haven't been able to find much info about these.

My main question is how slow is this laptop going to be with this old processor? It's not for gaming, it will be mainly for work (wireless security testing, Novell administration apps, email, web dev, etc.) and for school (word, web, wireless, etc etc.) I need mobility and decent battery life. I also need cheap, which is the main seller to me for this.

Too slow - wait for something else
or
Go camp out for it?

Thanks.

if i had the money i would... not much longer down the road you could pop a core2 mobile in it. just a thought, good deal imo.

A core duo (not core 2 duo?) would swap straight in and the chipset and everything would support it?

both core duo and core 2 duo, both using the same pin layout/assignment as well as fsb.

Not to sidetrack your plans, but it never hurts to pop into a BB or a Circuit City and see what you can get open box...thats how I got my laptop. A buddy of mine got an HP DV5000 series laptop with an AMD cpu (I can't remember which one, but it was one of the fastest available like 4 months ago), 2 gigs of ram, 100gig hard drive, ATI graphics, for like $499. You may drop a few more bucks but you may get a better machine.

p.s. the BB link is dead right now so i can't even see what you're checking out :) just wanted to offer my 2 cents!

Wow... then I am totally getting this. I can upgrade super easy to a core 2 duo whenever I need it, and by then they will be even cheaper than they are now.

Then all I need is a 7200rpm notebook drive for it.

Thanks a bunch!

Edit - Open box is no warranty however right?
