I'm building a new C2D system w the DQ6 board. I have the e6600 w 2 Gb of G. Skill PC2 6400 4-4-4-12. This will be my new daily driver and my goal is to OC to 3 GHz without having to overvolt the cpu.
I ordered this coolermaster cooler, http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16835103016, but because of the cooling plate on the underside of the MB It won't fit. I could dremel to size the plastic washer so it can lie flush against the underside of the MB next to this cooling plate, but before doing so does anyone know of any other aftermarket air coolers that will fit without alteration?
Will the stock cooler get me to 3.0 GHz?

Well, I ended up taking off that underside "heatsink" in order to secure the cpu cooler. I'm really not sure how much that thing would have helped in cooling the cpu and northbridge. There was a 1 mm thick piece of double face tape between the copper heat sink and the underside of the motherboard that covered the entire area.

the back plate can usually fit right behind it. but if you took it off already. no point on putting it back on
thats one thing I didnt like about that mobo that I had briefly. It actually hindered its placement into my mobo tray in the p160w case I had, that copper backing stuck out to far. The scythe infinity I has was a PITA to mount on it cuz of the placement of the sink above the socket. The layout on that board is cluttered, it does perform as well as the p5bdeluxe though this I can say from hands on.

I owned a Asus, and I now own a DQ6. Im much happier with the DQ6... I will never buy another Asus.

yeah we know gigabyte pays you to say this anyway
either that or your an incredible gigabyte fanboy
I think gigabytes bios sucks
there's really no diff anyway aside from the bios and layout which are both subpar compared to the asus p5b they do perform the same though.
You wait till your gigabyte goes poopoo and you have to deal with their retarded rma department.

I know some people have just picked up longer screws from hardware stores to fit some aftermarket coolers. You could go with the artic freezer pro 7, which doesn't require a backplate. I am able to achieve 3.74 ghz on my e6600 with this cooler and mobo.

Im actually an Asus Hater... I hate them, with a passion. I beleive they make overpriced products that have a fundimental flaw. I saw that they have a flaw because, Ive read about the design of the board and people have noticed that they dont do something everyone else does. I dont have references to this, nor do I care to lookup the reference I had...
The truth is, I dont like the from the ground up. Asus is a bad company and provides some of the highest costing products with no real benifit. In addition, they create MoBo's that are not designed right, just so they can be in a market early. Example: P5B... It was replaced with the P5B-E.
The P5B was a horrible motherboard, and I was burned when I bought it. The product is totally incapable with the X6800, even though they list it as a supported chip.
Asus also has a VERY short memory supported list, especially compaired to the gigabyte.
I have to agree with you that the Giga-Bytes Bios has much to be expected from it. I know Giga-bytes reputation, and they will sort out all of the issues with this motherboard. The F8 Bios should be released shortly and will fix the X-Fi issues, and allot of memory problems.
I hope people DONT buy Asus MoBos... Ive made it a mission to warn everyone of their business practices. They are the worst company Ive delt with in a VERY long time.
I dont want to start a ****ing war, its just my opinion. I like my coffee black, while others like it with creme and sugar. To make matters worst, Giga-byte just agreed to buy parts from Asus... EEEK!
I am amazed at reports of people having problems with the bottom heatsink (outside aftermarket aircoolers). Any case that requires this part beign removed is a bad case. I would assume it doesnt meet the ATX standard fully. But I am not sure their is a requirement for how high the MoBo has to sit off the bottom of the plate. Most use the regular standard pegs, and all of thoose cases will work well with the Gigabyte DQ6. I run the Swiftech Storm, with no problem, and I love the oversized heatsinks, because I watercool, and I do not have a specific fan that blows through these fans.

P.S. I am a NEWEGG fanboy, and Im proud of it... I buy everything from them. They are a AWSOME company with an amazing track record, and my extensive personal history with them makes me proud to shop there. I also dont get any checks from anyone who I promote... most companies I work for suck... I wish I could work at NewEgg, at least I would have some satisfaction that the company I work makes so many peoples lives easier.
lol to each is own but your pretty lost there buddy, maybe known else will tell you but I will.
Memory issues its the same damn chipset dude, the boards are the same ones blue ones black LMFAO nd funny how the best clocks are all on a p5b deluxe I dont see them on the Dq6...
I had 1 rma experience with ASUS and I had a new board in 3 weeks I had 1 rma experience with gigabyte and they sent me a dead board 2x, what a joke I used it as a dart board.

To get back to the original thread topic, I've got my new system up and running over the weekend. I'm currently burning the CPU in with prime95 and cpu burn in concurrently. This MasterCooler Eclipse is doing a great job. At idle my cpu temp is lower than my case temp! Under load it's currrently at 35C at stock speed.
When I'm done burning in I'm going to see how high this board and 6600 can go, but my plan is still to OC to only 3 GHz for daily use once I'm done playing.
The cooler doesn't require a back plate. The mount holes were just too close to the underside heat sink so I couldn't get the washer and nut to tighten down the cooler at 2 of the 4 holes. That's why I had to take the plate off.
I really liked the feature set of this board which is why I went with it. The rest of my system includes a BFG GeForce 7600GT card, 4 Seagate 320 Gb perp SATA drives running 200 Gb in RAID-0 and 750 Gb in RAID-5 using Matrix RAID, 2 Gb G. Skill 6400 DDR2 4-4-4-12, and a DVD-RAM light scribe burner.

Why are you coming to a Giga-byte forum if you dont like the board? I owned a 965 Asus and know allot about them, but I dont go there and bitch and moan about them... anyways, The DDR2 standard is all sorts of screwed up... this memory has more problems with it then anything I can remember. Every board uses different memory, and every board fails on different memory. There is a LONG list of non-supported DDR2 chips that Asus doesnt support and dont work with... Ive spent time triing to help these people issolate the problem, only to find out that the memory is the issue. It is the SAME thing here on these forums...
Now back to the original post, could you put the back heatsink on after you put in the screws? I have a storm, and it has screws that hold the heatsink down on the 775 setup. Yet I was able to put it on with 0 problem. You must have big Screws:).

why is it that people think that just because they are behind an imaginary whatever forum wall that they can speak incorrectly of something that might be in a another companies forums and not expect a response...
so if I go to asus forum and say I am a gigabyte hater its ok then right ?

You made your point... I guess I have a double standard... I am truely sorry.
I do like my Gigabyte, I dont like Asus. I havent heard of that big of a difference between OCing on the two boards, but for me, Im not looking to MAX out everything. Im just looking for a stable platform that will last 10 years. I was burnt by Asus, and it cost me $160. Now Im out of that money, and I got a motherboard sitting in a box with no use in site. I am truely hurt by my experiance with them.
After all of this, I get a Gigabyte DS3, spend ALLOT less money and am relatively happy. It too has its flaws, but at least I can use it. I buy it from NewEgg, and like it so much, I ask NewEgg if they will take it as a return so that I can upgrade, and get more out of my memory (as Corsair suggested I do). Now, once again, NewEgg kicks butt and does something no other company would do.
So you can now see why I have what I have in my sig.
I think I may have highjacked the thread... Oops... Sorry everyone.
