I have a crapy gen 56k and am looking to get a new one to see if it lowers my ping any. I am concerned with online gaming and ping (curently 300-350) and am hoping I can do better, and no cable/dsl/shotgunning is not an option. So let me know if there are any good reviews or if you have recomendations.

Thanks

Well, you can go to CompGeeks (http://www.compgeeks.com) as they have a Diamon SupraExpress external hardware modem for only $22.

Don't know how good it is at gaming but they make good modems and external hardware modems almost always help stabilize a good ping.

Worth a look at that price regardless.

I have a US Robotics modem an I can say that their the best modem I've owned. I had an Acer (but fried it), a creative modem blaster (what a p.o.s. that was), then I finnaly got my US Robotics modem. Its been almost 5 years an I've had no problems with it either. I also play many games on the internet (ie counter strike mostly) I get pretty good pings with this modem. Just last night I was getting pings of 160ms-180ms on a CS server with bout 18 ppl playing. The lowest ping I've gotten with this modem was 130ms :) .

Btw, if you haven't already you should try tweaking your modem with I-speed or some other program that adjusts mtu settings. This will help slightly with stability a tiny bit. Also having a good isp is probly the best thing you can do next to getting a better modem.

Just be sure that if you do get an internal modem get one that will work in DOS mode (hardware based) NOT a WinModem or anything that says "optimized for Windows" which really means "crippled for Windows".

If you get an external modem it is hardware based.

I have had really good experience with ZOOM:D They're modems can cost $50-$60 but they're worth it:D

For what it is worth the fastest 56 k modems I have experienced are those with a Lucent chipset. They are cheap too !

Thats my 2 cents , billy

I vote for a USR external modem. Can't beat it for quality.

I second that. I used an external zoom 56k before going cable.
It's a great modem.
But if you're gonna use a soft modem, they are pretty much all the same, and you won't really see much differance between any of them, but I'd go with a U.S. robotics in that case.

MY TUPPENCE WORTH.........

Was using a intel HaM internal hard / rockwell internal hard / trust internal hard / 3 com internal hard / all done their job with only a small differenence (all pci hardware) between each.....Due to a fault i picked up a Diamond supramax external USB for nothing!!(boot sale deal - modem was still sealed in box!!) and it gives 0 cut offs and is stable as mable with devine pings.........................im getting cable modem before the end of month so if you pm me ill give you an address to post a self addressed box or package and post it to you for nothing (it looks kewl to in see thru blue plastic box 4 red lights - fits in well).........respect trapper;)

There's a guy on E-bay that seems to have an endless supply of used US Robotics Courier modems for $25 inc. shipping. These are some high dollar modems. Just be sure to get the 25mhz. I've been using one of these for a year now and am very pleased with it. I don't know anything about ping times though. Oh, and it IS a hardware modem.
