I know there are "surround sound" headphones available, but I'm not sure exactly how they work. I have a SB Audigy2 ZS Platinum which supports 5.1 sound. How exactly do surround sound headphones connect to the soundcard? I can't just plug them into the normal stereo headphone jack, right? So where would they attach? If they attach to the three 1/8-inch jacks on the back of the soundcard, does that mean I need to unplug my 5.1 speakers every time I plug in the headphones, or do the headphones come with some sort of splitter box?

I realize that the surround sound quality of the headphones isn't going to be close to that of a true 5.1 speaker setup, but I don't really have a choice. My wife hates the sounds of the war games I play, and I feel like I'm missing a lot when I use stereo headphones. When she leaves the house, I crank up the volume on the speakers and I love hearing bullets and mortar shells strike behind me. It just adds a lot to the experience.

Youll be missing more going to surround headphones. A high quality set of stereo headphones will sound much better than 5.1 headphones. Ive tried 5.1 headphones, and when something is happening in front of you it sounds like its coming from on top of you, same with the "rear" channels. Stereo headphones plus CMSS-3D will give better positional audio. I used to have the Zalman 5.1 headphones, and they sound a wee bit muffled, make that way muffled compared to my Sennheiser PX200 stereo phones. The only thing the Zalmans had going for them was the bass output, which becomes irrelevant once you hook up a decent amp to a set of stereo headphones.
