If you're brave enough to look (and can understand Japanese) you can check out the very guts of the $600 behemoth.

Scope it out here (http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2006/1111/ps3.htm).

Very cool. :)

Wow. I hope one of my friends buy a PS3. And a Wii too!

It kinda does look like a fish. Love the proc. Maybe in the future all procs will look like that?

Wow, it's huge. I'd like to see them build PS3 slim version out of this :p

Nice find

I just don't see it happening. Not that I don't want to, but it seems impossible.

Yeah, imagine having to dissipate the heat made by 180w power consumption....

the top down view of the drives sitting side by side reminds me of a gutted xbox LOL.

Yeah that is a big fan...and it's that type that video cards have....you know the loud kind...wonder if this thing is gonna be noisy.

Reports have said it's actually pretty quiet.

I believe this because in our overclocking experience we know that a 120mm fan is MUCH quiter than an 80mm fan and people complained about how loud the 360 is and I'd say that the fans in the back of the 360 are probably either 40mm or 60mm.

Iol imagine if you can overclock the ps3.

ps3 slim = 2yrs

let me correct you:

ps3 slim = 20yrs

or

ps3 slim = 2ft

;)

ps the PCB is huge. No wonder its is so expensive. Can argue that you aren't getting your monies worth in raw materials.

Odds are you'd pop one of the Cell processors, then you have a $600 paperweight. Not worth the risk.

Wow.....A seagate hard drive that costs...40$ retail but costs 100 extra $...

I love the fact they have seprate units for every purpose.

I also like the coolers.

Nice...

Does taking the top off void warranty? It looks like it haas hinges?!?!

edit: Looks like even the 20 gig one can be upped on the hard drive for an extremly cheap price!

The extra cash also goes to the wireless card in 60gb version.

True. The SD readers too.

There is no way they can make a slim version out of that. Perhaps a slimmER version, like the size of a 360 or something, but the manufacturing technology the make THAT the size of a slim PS2 is a long ways away.

Looks like all the chips are cooled by one massive heatpipe plate with the fins at the back cooled by a 160mm fan. I want to see one up close.

HAHA.. have you seen the cost of some of the hardware benched :D

Alas, no 3dMark or SPI scores comming out of this unit, otherwise someone would try :p
You would need to get Windows running on it first though LOL.

Nope, not going to happen.

I have to say this....

Thats what she said.

I want to see windows running on this!!! Is that possible??

zexmarquies01

i doubt that windows will be able to be put on the PS3....for a year or 2. heh.

eventually, someone will figure out how to do it.

but, you can already put linux on it. So its only a matter of time before someone makes overclocking tools, CPU/GPU/RAM benchmark tests and such to run on the PS3 with linux.

honestly, i want to try Boinc or folding on this thing. just see what that cell processor can really do.

I remember hearing those same "damn this is huge" comments back when the xbox launched lol. But yeah, nowdays I am pretty neutral about the PS3 (got bored of the hating lolz)

That and the news about linux and F@H is pretty cool too :D

That's not a normal 3.5" Hard drive, it's a 2.5" laptop drive. that drive is probably worth well over $100 retail (i'd be willing to guess around $150 max), and they probably get 'em in bulk for say $50-$75 a piece or so...

Who knows

I'm kinda scared of the PS3 though... The thing is huge... It might eat me for dinner or something..

deathman20

Actually lap top harddrives are pretty close to $1 = 1Gig

I couldn't find a 20gig version but 40Gig is ~$48, and 60Gig is ~$58-63

The drives aren't that expensive its what else your getting for the extra $100 that you are forgetting.

BTW For the size commit above that I made, I wasn't talking about the unit itself hehe, I was talking about the chips under the hood and heatsink. But at least they know how to cool there hardware properly from what it looks like.

I SAW DDR3!!! I SAW DDR3!!! I wonder if thats supposed to be system memory or just gfx. do consoles have both?

Well the Emotion Engine/GS chip could be removed for a start, AFAIK Sony has announced that they intend to do so in later hardware revisions and support PS2 games through high level emulation. Presumably this would mean a few other components (like power circuitry and whatever bus connects it to the Cell) could be removed from the board. You could make a whole bunch of little changes too, higher density DRAM modules, a cooler die shrunk RSX with less beefy cooling, etc.

Courtesy of Kotaku, we now have video evidence (http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/ps3/how-to-dismantle-a-ps3-214566.php) of the potential destruction of a PS3. Like the Kotaku article said 'It's the gaming equivalent of wiping your ass with $100 bills'.

yup :p, i havent seen a comparison to the 360 but it looks big

deathman20

Its bigger then the X360 if not mistaken. But the power supply is inside the machine. I know I read that somewhere and it was here and had a link with it.
