View Full Version : Your 7900GT OC settings and temps?

currently i'm running a plain jane EVGA 7900GT at 567/863 and my load temps are never above 48c or so (ambient of 24c).
load temps obtained running nvidia geo forms demo for 15 minutes at 1600x1200 with all max settings.
is this a decent overclock/temp ratio while using an air cooler?
if not, what's a decent 7900GT overclock? what are your associated load temps?
i'm using a fairly cheap third party cooler (vantec iceberq 6) which took 15 degrees off of my stock cooler load temps.
was curious what other 7900GT owners are seeing.

Specs in sig... I would try the vmod, if you're willing to do the work. It's not tough to do and you can find some excellent guides in the V-mod section here on the forums. I haven't seen a card get less than 675 Mhz on the core with a vmod to 1.5V. The v-mod is what makes the 7900GT a really good deal. The mod isn't tough to do and you already have aftermarket cooling. All you need is a conductive pen. They are ~$12 from Fry's or radio shack. The mod took me about 20 minutes and I've been running it for 4 months at slightly lower clocks than sig (715 core) and have yet to see a single artifact. Just make sure you keep an eye on temps. I would never go above maybe 70C for any extended length of time (though, in my experience, a GPU is extremely hard to kill with excessive temps. It's still good to be cautious). You should definitely look into it, it will give you a huge boost in performance. I went from ~4400 in 3dmark06 to ~6480.

Thats a pretty iecent O/C. I got my EVGA 7900GT to 590 on the core with stock Voltage.
as Burninate said. if your brave enough. Do thew V.mod. I now run at 710, @ 1.5V. Temps in the 60's on 3dmark 06. you also have a 1.3V and a 1.4V option. theres a great guide in the Volt modding section.
and that extra MH/z makes a difference. ;)

Just to elaborate a bit, the 4400 in 3dmark06 was at stock 500 Mhz core settings, not my un-v-modded max oc. But it's definitely worth the 20 or 30 minutes worth of work, the performance incrase is huge.

regarding my questions about a 7900GT overclock and temps:
i did the 1.5 volt mod today ... using conductive pen ... and boy was that a tight working space! i cleaned with acetone several times before getting it right. would have been nice to have one of those headmounted magnifying glasses. i ended up using a needle dipped into a small pool of the "ink" as the tip of the pen was way to cumbersome to work with.
anyway ... i've since been able to up my overclock to 680/852; anything higher doesn't pass tests. i figure my numbers will be better at lower ambients since my ambients at the time of testing are rather high ... around 77.5 F.
my temps have jumped *way* up. idling around 43 (same as stock volts with stock cooler) and half life 2 hit's 68 very very occasionaly for maybe a millisecond and otherwise averages around 62 (again, almost exactly my temps when using the stock volts and stock cooler).
my previous temp test, using geoforms for 15 minutes maxes around 58.
all in all, acceptable temps for my daily usage.
the only FPS test i've done is half life 2 lost coast stress test and i jumped from 125fps to 144fps after the vmod. nice jump.
what i'm wondering is this:
i know i did *something* ... i mean, i couldn't get anywhere near a vcore of 680 before ... but how do i measure the precise active voltages? i have nvidia tools and RivaTuner. is there a way via those tools to read the current voltages?
also, i did not gain anything in my memory settings; what exactly is the mod i need to do to enable higher memory clock speeds?

Not with software. for that, you need a multi-meter. the first pic in http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=454737 This thread, shows you here to get the core Voltage.
And as for the "something" you did. the connections you made are simply switches, telling the card how much Voltage to give the core.

Running 610/840 and temp never gets above 53C. Running a gigabyte with zalman cooler.

nice numbers there, i overclocked mine last year and started getting artifacts while gaming so i put it back to normal...i mean, what's the real difference between 190fps and 220fps ... none right...but i'll reinstall that oc software for nvidia cards and try it again. i hope to beat all ya'll :)
My GS was so much better than my GT =(. would overclock to 760 np under water with 1.55 volts, where this GT i have now will barely run 650+ with a lot more than that on the same water.
right now i can get 675/880 completly artifact free, and 720/840 with the odd ati tool spec every few minutes.
my GS would do 720/950 without issue on 1.55 volts and 2.3 vmem. never went above 37C either, where this GT on the same volts just doesnt do nearly as well.im running 44C load but i guess the extra pipes are causing that.
kinda tempted to pick up another one with them being like $150 to try out sli, but we will see. I just baught a tablet pc lol.

eVGA 7900GT KO Superclocked 256MB OVERCLOCKED TO 640/1800 VGA Cooling: VF900 37* idle, 75 on HEAVY load
taken from my sig.
i did NOT do a volt mod on my card. but if i can get this kind of clockings without one i would wounder what i would get with one  :D
this card dose not have any artfacting at all and i have had it at these clockings for over 5 months now.

I've got card in my sig, stock cooler, idles at 54c and load has gone up to 109c. thats crazy, now i am really gonna get me a zalman cooler, but does anyboby know what temp difference ther is between the older vf-700 coolers and the new vf-900?
Seeing at the older ones are less than half the price.

Looks like im gonna need a zalman or something to cool my GPU.
Havent even tried ovrclking it, temps are way too high as it is.

Yeah, 109C is way above safe operating temp. From what I've read, the difference in temps from a vf700 to a vf900 is ~3 to 5C. Not a huge difference, but a difference none the less. The price difference, last time I checked, was only about $6 or $7 though, so it may be worth it just to get the 900. The stock cooler on these cards is barely better than worthless. It's loud and inefficient for Over-clocking. At an OC of about 610 Mhz (my max before V-mod) I was seeing around 85C under load. Didn't know this thread was still alive. Nice to see people are still picking up the 7900 GTs, they are excellent bang-to-buck ratio cards.

My Galaxy 7900gs runs 650 core 900 memory im sure it's a 7900 gt in disguise and in fact it annihalates my next door neighbours 7900gt by around 800 point in 3dm06 at just under 6000 points plus he is running e6600@2.4ghz with 3gb of geil pc26400 opposed to my e6300@2.73 with 1gb of crucial ballistix pc26400 temps are 44 idle and no more than 60 under load with zalman and if i vmod i reckon i can push another 100mhz on each i just wish there was a way to unlock pipes like on my old 6800xt best £120 i have ever spent on a gfx card

very nice 7900gs u have there oc1. I need to get a new cooler for my card, then i'll start pushing it. The 7900 cards are such good value for money, and oc really well.
I have had mine as high as 600/2000 on stock voltage with a zalman cooler, but when it gets hot, it starts to artifact. So I run mine daily at 560/1800. I am getting closer and closer to doing a volt mod. I think I am going to go buy a pen and leave it on my desk to urge me more.
On my zalman cooler, I normally don't go over 50c unless it is a really hot day, how high you think I can volt mod to before I have to water cool?
I don't know why I am asking that, I am probably going to go .1 volt at a time anyway.....
--pak
Just mod'd mine to 1.3. I am getting 615 on the core at ~52c while gaming on wow for a few hours. If I don't get artifacts by wed-thrusish I am going to go for 1.4.

I've got mine running at 675/1754 right now. I idle around 40C with a Zalman 900 and I load about 65C in full 3D. The load temp is so much higher because my car switches from 1.2v during 2D mode to 1.4 during 3D mode. If I had 1.4 going all the time I could probably OC the core quite a bit more but idle temps would be up there.

You def. need a good cooler if you plan on volt modding it. Stock mine would do 550/825 (my card came stock at 1.2Vcore) with a modded NV silencer (bought it before any good coolers were out for 7900GT). At 1.5Vcore and 2.2Vdim. it goes to 700/920(1840DDR) bench stable and 650/900(1800DDR) 24/7 stable. Mind you I have 1 of the 1st prodution cards and you will likely get better core clocks with less volts but they are not using samsung memory on most cards so the clocks there suffer. My temps run in the 70's at full load and in the mid 50's at idle.
