View Full Version : Need help with my routers-

My network is setup like this- I've got an ADSL filter connected to the phone line, and connected to this filter is a modem cable (not LAN/ADSL cable), which then goes to my ISP's router.
This setup was OK for some time, until I had to go wireless. So I purchased an U.S robotics WL router, and I connected it to the router as if it were a switch. Now, having 2 routers is really a PITA, especially for hosting some games and BitTorrent. Now, yesterday I was thinking of a solution- I saw a filter in a shop that has an ADSL (not modem) cable connection... If I were to buy this piece, could I just get rid of my ISP router, and connect the WL router to the phone line? I couldn't do this before because I couldn't find such a filter, and my U.S robotics router doesn't have a modem cable connection.

I think you are getting things confused here. That filter just changes the connector, not the signal running through it. RJ-45 (like ethernet jacks) is sometimes used for telephone connections.
What you want to do is login to your ISP's provided modem/router (it's one unit, right?), and change it to bridge mode versus routing mode. Then plug it into your WAN port on your new wireless router. Then you are done, no more complicated than that. If you are unsure as to how to login to your ISP's modem/router, post the model number for it, and we can give you a hand in finding its login info.

Well, I've had this connection set up for around a month now..
I know how to access my routers etc..... but I still have not been able to get a website to recognize some of my open ports, for example.
I'd really appreciate if you could help me set it all up. My ISP's router is a Netopia Cayman 3300 Series, and my WL router is an U.S Robotics USRXX5462.

keep this isp router as the main router. connect a patch cable LAN to LAN on the other router. make sure the other router's ip is different. turn off dhcp and NAT on the second router. You're done.

Ok, I think I got it! Switched the ISP router to bridge as you suggested... then did some other stuff, and it worked!
