I have had my comptuer oc'd for about a year now and my harddrive recenly died on me and i had to replace it. But the replaced harddrive is giving me continous system lag and i cant even multitask. Even opening webpages creates some lag and programs etc. I've checked in device manager and made sure DMA was checked and i've went over my bios many times. Could this be a problem with the board? or with the chip? If anyone knows that would be great, thanks.

Hi puppetmasta, welcome to the Forum,
Probably all depends by the Fsb too high that sequentially brings out of specs the Pci/Agp bus, and that this new Hd doesn't like, can you give us more info about your system for a more detailed Reply?
Thanks ;)

well i have an asus cuv4x-e, it can handle uta 100 which the harddrive is. Its a celeron 700 which was at 945 and i have lowered it to the original stock speed, to not complicate anything. I've tried unchecking DMA and that doesnt change anything. I'm running windows ME. The harddrive is a wester digital WDBB400 i believe and its a 40gig uta100 7200rpm. This harddrive is new but is the same model and brand as the last one that died. So i figured there wouldnt be a problem. I don't understand why it would have troubles, all i can think is that i damaged the board or something by overclocking. Does this help at all?

Onestly no more considering that your Cpu now is working at the stock speed, the only suggestion I've at the moment is to try to use a new Ata100 cable and a program that will check the Hd (SMART), generally you can found these programs on the WD website, but can you give me more detail about the Hd prob?

the problem happens during web browsing, like at the end of a webpage loading the system will lag for a second, also when i try and transfer stuff off the network like something big it will do fine for the first minute and then lag really hard, like the mouse becomes horribly immovable and the time on the transfer skyrockets. Also uploading off the harddrive is really slow, during ftp transfers its horrid. I'm not sure if any of this is related but i hope so, heh. I'm even considering scrapping the board and chip and getting a new atholon :/

I have a 30gig WD that required the included utilities disk to initialize the ATA part (or maybe it was just ATA100. I forget). Did you read the docs? Was there a utilities disk with it? Don't know if yours is the same, but worth checking out.
