I got my good one at a local electronics store (not RS), though there's a place online that I can't seem to think of that has them...
Anyway the color code goes like so:
Color1, ColorOpposite1, Color2, Color3, ColorOpposite3, ColorOpposite2, Color4, ColorOpposite4
Where color is either the stripe or solid in a pair and the opposite is the other. :)
The wires are laid out left to right looking at the side with out the lock. 1 orange/white, orange, green/white, Blue, blue/white, green, brown/white, brown.

hola,
shep has the order of the wires right (altho there are two different layouts, the A and B version, that one is the one currently used most often).
my tools i use are made by IDEAL
the crimper/cutter is part # 30 696
and something you wont want to live without if you make more than a couple cables is a tester
part # 62-080 (and 62-081 for the "A" remote unit).
using the tester will save you TONS of headaches in determening if a wire is functional or not. especially when you have multiple cables connecting between the hub/router, and you dont know which one is the bad one.
good luck!
only bad thing about do-it-yourself networking is climbing thru the ceiling and all that fiberglass insulation, ugh!
Home Depot surprisingly has a great set that I use here at work... it is black with blue plastic parts on it...

Make sure you get a quality set that has replaceable blades for the strippers and replaceable crimps. Also does hurt to get one that will do both CAT-5 and RJ-45 (phoneline).

You may wanna check out www.grainger.com. They have just about anything you may need. They are pretty prevelant so you probably have one near you.
Radioshack sells some half-decent ones, surprisingly enough.
And I see they let you keep your nickname. Good Job!!

RJ-11 is Phoneline... RJ-45 is Lan cable...
Having both never hurts... :D
I would check at Home Depot... They sell Ideal Crimpers & Testers, ends (the crimps themselves), cable, wall jacks, etc. It's typically not where you might thing though. In my local Home Depot, it's all the way in the back left in front of where they plug in the batteries for those giant forklifts they drive around.. So it's kinda hidden, but they have good stuff at an alright price...
Good Thread!

Hehe... I know the feeling... I have a coffeemaker that makes coffee before I get up, I wake up, have a cup of coffee, shower, have another cup of coffee, refill for the drive to work, then have a pot or two while I'm at work, or several Pepsi soda products... Most days, I'm still dead tired after all of this... :D
Peace

heh, you do realise why, right?
stimulants perk you up for a while but drain you for the long run. ex: sugar, cafeen, etc.
if you actually get past the jonesin' for the cafeen, and drink water you'd be more energetic in the long run.
and no, i dont drink water all the time, i'm a cafeen addict too... but i do find i'm more awake and less tired every once in a while when i go on a "cafeen strike" for a few weeks.

Slowly drink less and less coffee and drink water. Lots of water will give you far more energy than coffee. I do drink both, usually a 20oz cup of coffee and then a 2-liter of water during the day. I actually have energy when I get home.

That sounds like a recipe for lots and lots of trips to the rest room.
