Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian said in his note to investors:

"We expect Sony to deliver 150-200k units to stores in the United States for the launch; consumers without pre-orders may find it difficult to locate an available system. We estimate sales of approximately 750k PS3s domestically by year-end."

That's a far shot from 400,000 units on release, and 1.2 by years end, huh?

Good luck getting one if you don't have a pre-order

this is so big for both Nintendo and Microsoft...especially Microsoft...now is the time to advertise advertise because 360 has alot of sweet games coming out and there are going to be all these people wanting PS3's that won't be able to get one until.....the summer at least....a big marketing campaign could make people say screw it...I'm not gonna wait for a PS3.

This got me thinking. Before this, it was 400,000 for North America. Now it's 200,000 for the US. Does this mean that the other 200,000 are going to Canada?

There's been no real word on what is being allocated for Canada, so I'm curious to see how many we're getting.

errrrr.....North America is inclusive of the United States AND Canada, Latin America is all the countries between the US and South America (ie: Mexico, Pananma, Nicaragua) and South America is pretty explanatory.

They're inculding Canada's figures in the US numbers so 200,000 for US and Canada. We both have pretty much the same retailers anyway (ie: Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, EB, etc...)

That's today's geography lesson, kids :D

I think the 400k promise was actually less than half the previous one, because I think they were shooting for something past 1 million, but I can't remember for sure.

Now...imagine being a developer. You just spent multi-millions trying to make a PS3 launch game. It's a game made for the North American audience (Japanese not particularly interested), but you hope to sell real well in North America. Even if your game is HUGELY popular and half the PS3 owners on the contintent buy your game, you can still only sell 75k - 100k copies near release time. What if it's not popular? ....hardly sell anything. From there, you're trying to ride the wave and sell to more people who eventually buy the console. So, there is hope, but time is also working against selling more copies....game becomes old, newer more interesting games come out. Release titles usually are rapidly improved upon. Not a good situation for the people trying to sell games.

Well John, unfortunately if you take the 10,000 or so Blockbuster and Hollywood video stores in North America who'll likely buy 2-4 copies of each game then they have an instant 20k-40k unit sales.

200,000 thousand going to customers, then Sony is selling the other 200,000 to eBay to make up for lost profit. :D

1.2Million is the number for the Wii, PS3 is saying only 750k which is even worse.

Huh? Last I heard Nintendo was sending 4 million Wii's to North America and Sony was sending 150-200k PS3s (as this thread says).

Not saying it's true, just saying the guy who said those numbers said that about the Wii not the PS3. The PS3 is only 750k units.

FudgeNuggets
11-15-06, 06:56 PM
Those numbers are WAAAAAAAAY off tenchi. As stated above the PS3 was supposed to be 400k, but in reality is now 150-200k, the Wii is supposed to be between 4 and 6 million, 1.2 million is even less than the 360 had at launch (1.6 million).

So how are my numbers off?

Edit: Maybe I am wrong here but it seems you guys are for some reason saying hes 100% right on the PS3 and wrong about the Wii? This guy has been predicting a shortage for the Wii for awhile now and just upped his number to 1.2million shipped by years end. Going of the number from Nintendo of 4million thats around 70%(not actually calculating so could be wrong)shortage compared to the PS3 shortage of his numbers being more around 60%. I am not saying Nintendo is wrong, I am simply saying that this guy probably is. Still though that number for years end number of PS3 sounds more real then 2 million.

You (or some guy, whoever it is) said that on launch, PS3 will have 750k and Wii will have 1.2 million. Sony has said they will have 150-200k North American units on launch and Nintendo has said they will have 4 million North American Wii's. That's how your numbers are off.

tenchi86
11-15-06, 09:22 PM
No, I said they would have those numbers by years end. Those numbers came from the source Oni is using, which I why I say hes probably wrong.

I am wrong, or the data I posted is wrong?

Originally, the Wii was going to have 1 million worldwide by launch, and 4 million by the end of the year. This is attainable, and so far, has not changed.

The PS3 sold just over 88,000 units in Japan, Taiwan is only getting 500 for the whole damn country (http://www.destructoid.com/taiwan-will-only-get-500-ps3s-ouch--27882.phtml), and now North America is only getting between 150,000 - 200,000 units. Poor Europe and Australia aren't getting any until March 2007 at the earliest.

Sony's original numbers were 400,000 for the North American market, and 100,000 for the Japanese market, and I think they were aiming for 1,000,000 by the end of the year. Clearly, with these current cuts, they are nowhere near even their original launch day goal. I don't see how they'll manage to crank out over 700,000 units in just over a month to make their million unit goal by year end.

This is bad for Sony.

Anyone actually pre-ordered a Wii?

Eb was limiting it to 10 per store when I tried them (lucky numer 11) and we haven't heard anything from the big N thats official.

I'm number 14 at Gamecrazy and would hate to be left out for any reason.

Anyone see any official information? Heck even 1.2 million at launch should get me a unit.

The Target in my area is only getting 6, and my friend who works at circuit city juist told me they are only getting 6 and people are allready lining up. Looks like I will not be getting one to sell on ebay.

if I am not mistaken the 200,000 is a fair amount less than the amount of 360s that shipped

I think the last thing I read on Wii launch numbers were 600k for the North America launch. 4 million by end of the year for the World, with just over 1 mil of that 4 here in NA.

So there are NOT going to be THAT many Wii's either. If Sony had hit the 400k US mark, then they would only be 200k less than Nintendo. Being at 200k or less is really sick though.

A quick peak at Wiki says theres what, 300+ Mil in the US. 500+ Mil in NA. Someones not getting what they want for Xmas.
