In my opinion Win 98 se with Win XP in a very close second..Most games run a bit faster on Win 98 se..but with the high end graphics cards it doesn't seem to make much of a diference give or takeing a few FPS....

Believe it or not, I had some of my best gaming experiances running Windows "ME". Right now I am running Win XP and everything seems to run great under it too, although I was able to get more fps under ME.

forget linux. the only linux version that will let u play games is the new mandrake version. so far win98se is the best iv seen.
I used to be a big fan of Win98SE, especially for games. But of late, I've been impressed with XP. I got higher 3DMark2001 scores in XP than in 98SE by about 200-300. But I have yet to really game in XP, since I just upgraded last week, and have had my plate pretty full right now.

Here is a list of games I am currently running under XP with no problems.
Unreal Tournament (my fav game :D)
Max Payne
NBA Live 2001
Diablo 2
All of the games are doing great for me.

Many of you may disagree with me, but I prefer Windows 2000. I consistently achieve graphics scores in it that are as high or higher than Win98SE (easily better than ME), and that consistently trounces WinXP. Furthermore, it's extremely stable and doesn't gradually degrade your computer like 98SE does--nor does it require invasive product activation. My only complaint would be that some software isn't compatible (then again, XP has quite a compatability problem). Also, any games that are MacOS X native are simply outstanding...MacOS X is an incredible operating system. The downside is that mac mainboards still have PC-133 SDRAM, though that will change in a few months.

No problems. :) Thats another reason XP is great, now M$ only has 1 current OS. = compatibility heaven :cool: But 2K is great for everything cept compatibility, crashed much less than XP 4 me.
I still use Win 98. I guess the only reason I haven't upgraded, I have never had any major problems. Don't get me wrong though, I would love to have Win 2K or XP!
I'd have to say 98se..only because ive never gamed under XP or linux, and ME is out of the question for me....i tried it once..crashed while it was trying to access the CD-Rom..5 different times...I wiped it and installed 98se

Depends. Win98SE because you can run anygame. But you gotta deal w/ a crash happy OS and horrid memory leaks
WinME=98SE w/ more bloat
Win2k/XPro not all games work 100%, just 99%. Crashes once a month for random reasons. Games that is. On newer games you get most of ur memory back. If not, I just relog on and the OS does a memory dump and you're back in business.
Linux, umm I'd say this is the worst being the n00b that I am but Avid *nix'ers could prove me wrong. They know what they're doing=)

XP baby! Never used Me or 2k though. Linux at work and it blows for gaming though I don't use that much either. Yeah she is hot...so what show is she on right now?
98SE seems to be the best for the number of games you can play on it.
But XP has fast boots and very stable for the games that do play on it. But some of the older games like Dungeon Keeper 2 and simular don't run on it even in compatibility modes.
so I would go with 98Se and XP duel booted.

I've been using ME, but only cuz this thing came with it. Only games i ever have problems with are Red Alert2 (reinstalled 4 times so far...) and Starsiege, which crashes occasionally. Of course, Starsiege is like ancient, but still, it's the best mech sim i've ever played :D! take that mechwarrior4:cool:
you can oc better in win 98 too.
but i am running xp

No way! i thouhgt linux was the ultimate OC-freindly os! DOes this child speak the truth?!
Windows 2000. Every game released now has support for it, its faster than XP, and even most older games that don't require Real Mode DOS can run on it.
To PhoenixMDM,
Sorry, I didn't know anything about Linux.
I've compared it with win 98, 98se, me, 2000 and xp

Ohhhhhh...
I've heard two things about linux OCing, that it's horrible, or that it's wonderful. The second one is most common though.
I have had the best overall game performance in win2k with the exception of quake 3 where my fps is considerably lower than in 98.
My experience has been:
98SE=Compatibility
WIN2k=Speed/Stability
WINXP=Gay Hardware Regististration Nonsense and Incompatibility
I haven't set up Win2k/98SE as a dual boot yet, but thats my plan for new computer.
The 2k/98 se dual boot setup is really good for gaming.

Whats the best way to do that? Is there a way to do it without partitioning the harddrive?

Install your 2000 on a FAT32 partition, then your 98 right on top of that. 2000 will handle all of you dual boot options then.

I was wondering if anyone knows any good games that runs on Linux. Either shooter or racing. Does anybody know how to run three monitors on Linux.
Window 98SE.
Alot fewer bugs. There has been more time to work out the bugs.
Just my two cents.

Definetlty Win2000 SP2. It never ever crashes. Runs faster than XP, does not have as much bloatware as XP, does not need nearly as much tweaking to get to run correctly as XP, and XP still has some stability problems. In games other than those based on the quake 3 engine (windows 2000 gets the best score in these ones), there is generally a 5-10fps loss but it does not matter because once you get over 60 fps, it does not matter how many more you get. I can run nearly every game at 1600x1200 w/ quincix AA on and full detail and get over 80 fps. You dont need anything better than that.
I just upgrades to xp and I GAINED OVER 10 FPS IN QUAKE3 SWITCHING FROM 2000 PRO TP XP PRO.
And my xp is untweaked.
