View Full Version : Another fried CPU post...I think?
Heres the scoop. New ABIT KT7A MtrBrd, TBird 950 and an aluminum shim that is supposed to be non conductive because of the anodizing process. Started the computer and got the normal info and then a message that stated CPU changed or nonworkable and then something about soft menu or something, i dont really remember. Hit DEL and nothng happened and I then realized that I didnt hook up my keyboard so I powered of the system, hooked up the keyboard and looking around and noticed I didnt have my fan plugged in. Uh oh i thought but upon further contemplation i figured it had only been on for about 15 seconds so it couldnt have heatd up that fast with no load. Hooked up the fan restarted the computer and got a black screen. DOHHHH! Reset the CMOS and no difference. Pulled everything back off and noticed that the shim has gouges where the bridges are (i think they are bridges) and around the core there is a discoloration in the form of liquid running off the core. Kinda hard to explain actualy. Soooo did I fry it or could it be something else?
Also, all my fans still work, cd rom and hard disk lights still flash when powered up but no signal to the moniter! HELP!
Thanks in advance!:(
AHHHHHHHh Noooooo I think you've did it I think you've fried a tbird. I have absolutely no experience with shims but from what I've read when they shift and ground out on you bridges the chip will fry. The liquid is pretty strange though were you using ASII for better heat transfer?

i dont know much about ocing, but i can tell you, liquid plastic running down your motherboard (or any other piece) cant be a good thing, well good luck to you, i hope i dont do that to mine, cuz im going to try to oc an older comp very soon, prob just add like 100 mhz since it is only a 533 maybe less, i dont wanna kill it ... yet.... *waits for new computer*
Oh my GOD!!! What a @#*#$@*#*@#@* I am! Upon closer inspection I noticed that somehow....SOMEWAY I put the shim on the CPU the wrong way so it was lying across the bridges. GODDD how could I overlook that. I was in a hurry but c`mon now. Oh well, another lesson learned and i graduated with top honers from the School of Stupidity!   :(
About the liquid, if you ook at the top of the core where it say Atholon there is a discoloration and it looks like liquid ran out from under the core but looking a pics of new chips they all have it. On the lower left corner of my core i noticed that it is dark brown and it looks like it is starting to lift a bit.
AM I A DOLT OR WHAT!!!!!
Ya think the Motherboard is still ok?
The mother board is sort of a crap shoot I've heard of fried chips killing the Mobo and sometimes the cards attached to it and I've heard of the cpu being the only innocent bystander.
Good Luck let us know.
Greaaaat! Well considering that were talking about me i will probably have to replace everything but the case! Thanks for your input and I keep ya posted!
P.S. Where is a good place to buy a new CPU??
Newegg (http://www.newegg.com)
This play rulez I bought alot of stuff from these guys , not one problem.

I am sorry to hear about the chip but on the good side your mobo will be fine.
shims aren't worth the trouble, and the dead cpus, imho. be careful with the hsf and you'll be fine. there are just so many posts of problems where shims are the culprit.
on the bright side of it, i'm pretty sure your mobo and such will be okay. hold thumbs!

Yes, sure sounds like another t-bird is toast. I also don't believe in shims. I feel that if you are careful, you can mount your hsf without chipping the core. I usually either mount it on the motherboard before I install it into the case or if the motherboard is already in the case, I pull out the psu so that I have more room to work inside. It only takes a couple of minutes to unscrew the 4 screws holding the psu in the case and get it out of the way.
Well my new chip should be here within the next few hours and I am extremely paranoid about putting it in now. I can just see myself cracking the core and ruining another Bird. Oh well...I`ll let ya know how it goes. And should I unlock it before I install it so I wont have to remove it later and risk the chance of screwing something up. And when a chip is unlocked does it run normally until u add the modifiers?

it depends on what lengths u are prepared to go and how expensive was the chip.
but i think you should go for it mate but just be careful when u put the cooler on.I hate those OEM clips.they are the most dificult to install.
Well the chip is in (WITHOUT A SHIM THIS TIME!) and i am using a FOP 38 and everything is working great. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that gave me advice. :D
Great I'm glad nothing else broke! So what kind of chip did you buy?
I purchased a 950 TBIRD. Now I just have to figure out how to configure the sensors in Mother board Moniter 5. Also my disks under system properties only show up as Generic IDE disks type 47. My CPU temp at idle is 25.5 C under Sandra 2001. I guess I have to just figure out how to Tweak the rest of my system before I attempt to overclock it.
madgamer.. is that your motor? NICE, man!!! can't for the life of me make out what it is, though... ???
