I'm fairly new to this scene and had a few ?'s to ask all of you. I bought an Athlon XP 1600 with a Dragon Orb 3 fan as the fan was required for the processor warranty. Anyway at 1.4 GHz it runshot, like at 67 deg idle, 73 full load - even with and exhaust fan, the Orb, and another case fan- is this too hot? - i underclocked to 1050 MHz and now run about 60 deg. Any suggestions? (I don't have any thermal paste but plan on ordering some - suggestioins? Arctic Silver? Where can i get some? and will this fix some of my problem?)

I am changing my reply.

Despite the poor reputations of Orbs, it looks like the D-Orb is OK, according to all of the reviews that I have read. You need some arctic silver II, and make sure that the clip is on nice and tight...

Those temps are way too high.

BTW, these are MBM readings - how high above the real values are those usually? - My system is running on a Gigabyte 7vtx-h with 512 DDR

Some are pretty accurate, some are not. I am not familiar with that motherboard's accuracy, but someone here must be...

ANYONE?

Your temps are running way too hot; something has to be wrong there even for a dragon orb 3. How is your case ventilation? You can't properly cool an AMD cpu without good case ventilation. Also, like flounder43 said, apply some arctic silver 2 instead of the TIM that came on the heatsink. The dragon orb 3 is supposed to be the best of the orbs, but there are a lot better hsf units out there, like the Alpha 8045 and the Thermalright SK6. Please don't try to clock back up until you fix the heat problem though as the socket thermisters can be off by as much as 15-20° C low. I would hate to see you kill your proc due to improper cooling.

my case has a rear exhaust fan and a front fan - keeps mboard down to high 20's low 30's (good/bad?) Where can i get arctic silver online?

I thought it weird at the time, but nothing came with the heatsink :( - that might be a major reason why it runs so hot - i use CPUCool in the idle times - drops temp to 27

Hey gigabyte mobos, at least my dxr, have their heat sensor actually touching the chip. From what I have read at www.athlonmb.com, it seems people report temps in the 70s without any problems. I have an xp 1600+ and it runs at 69 C. If you start experiencing lock ups, then you have a problem. Although on my duron it would read my temps at 49 C during hvy loads. The new xps are different in the fact that my sensor touches the chip, instead of the material the processor is held in.

Although this goes against everything this site stands for (excpet killing your comp), sacrifice a couple chickens and underclock to the max until you get some AS2 or Nanotherm ICE (just about the same quality).
If I found out that my CPU was running at 70+, I couldn't turn it off fast enough (but I don't have your mobo).

You should check to see if you have your HS on correctly. Sounds silly, but you can put the HS on wrong, and might not be touching the core 100%.

When i order AS should i get a shim too? - do they help in cooling or just protection of the core?

LOSE THE ORB!!!

Get either a win global CAK, swithtec, volcano 6cu, or an alpha PAL

Your temps will drop by 20C!!!!!

So what do you have for thermal paste right now? The zinc oxide spunk or phase change gum?

A chrome orb with white goop keeps a 1900+ at around 30C full load in my house. A dragon orb can only do better cuz it's got a copper core in there. The chrome orb is a POS but it works (bro's comp).

hey jbell, cak's suck hardcore style...and they weight a ton and have a crappy clip....DO3's are far better in comparison....

Zatch, go get some AS2 and reapply the heatsink...lap it if necessary. you could get a separate tempature monitor if you think the mobo temp probe is acting up, those are only like $10 so do that and then come back and tell us the results

I am guessing it only has their thermal pad on it. You need to get some artic silver 2 to put on there. I had a thermaltake heatsink and the pad was black but it can also be orange, pink, white, etc. You need to remove it with either acetone or rubbing alcohol on both the heatsink and the core of the athlon. Once you do that, head over to www.articsilver.com and apply the compound per their instructions. The put on your Orb and you should be fine.

Artic Silver 2 is sold all over the place

http://www.coolingears.com
http://www.2cooltek.com
http://www.svcompucycle.com
http://www.crazypc.com

are all good vendors(espcially the first one) to get AS2 from(or anything for that matter).

It is debatable. Some people think that shims can even impede cooling. I personally wouldn't bother.

ASII can be purchased a lot of places, I like sidewindercomputers.com.
