View Full Version : Busted a Cap

Okay just finished putting my rig together. And the Cap up in the corner of the motherboard felt a little loose, its an ASUS a8n-sli deluxe and at first I worried about it but moved it a little and it semed to firm up. I figured it was just the caps that asus uses, cuz on both boards the 2 caps down around the sata connectors are "loose" too.

I think what happened is one of the leads snapped... but up inside the cap.

So machine doesnt power up now.

So.. I was thinking about stealing a cap off of my vanilla board... but.. dont want to risk trashing that board too and being stuck with no mobo. (well I have another 939 board, a cheap Jetway that I experimented on spray painting, not something I want to actually try powering up LOL)

So I was wondering, what is the best place to order caps from? Aslo should I look at getting some of them.. uh.. fuhjitsu? caps that are supposed to be very good? If I do that should I replace all the caps on the board? What about getting these new solid caps?

Thanks

EDIT: Asking about the solid caps thinking that maybe I wouldnt break another tower cap that sits all alone out in the corner of the motherboard...

http://www.mouser.com
http://www.digikey.com
try both of those places, you should surely find any and all kind of caps that you are looking for. Make sure that they are identical in rating(s).

heh heh yah I liked the title :)

Yup its working again. Still going to look at changing out the caps on the board :)

Actually thinking about it.. I will check out those sites when I get home tonight. Might want to try completely remodding one of my boards :)

I had the idea to try changing the toroidal cores before... now I am thinking of replacing everything :)

Will definitly need to get a better soldering iron though.

EDIT: Oh btw.. .can now run windows at 3GHz on my 4600 :)

I would highly recommend Nippon/United Chemicon, Sanyo or the Panasonic FM series. ;)
