I put this under the sound card because i didnt know where else to put it, so your free to move it mods if you feel the need. Ok heres my problem ive had the same MP3s on my system for nearly a year and a half now, all encoded from my cds at 320kbps but ive recently upgraded to win2k form win98 and ive been hearing sporadic skips in my mp3s. they arent permenant so if i rewidn to where the skip was it doesnt play it again, ive tried watching my cpu usage while these happen and theres no spikes (its usually only using 5-15 % of the cpu) my only other idea is that windows 2k is having an issue with my sound blaster live! value. Ill give you my sys specs if that will help any

First install the latest drivers...Then check your hard drive leds for some kind of activity when idle. If so I would shutdown all background programs and try running the mp3 to see if the problem persists.

I've had problems out of mine skipping before when something was running in the back ground. I use windows me.
What program are you using to play your MP3's?

clean up programs that are runnin in the background. u kud do this thru msconfig. clear all programs which are unecessary on startup. that should clear up a few resources. i have an intel box with 256 megs... never had my mp3s skipping. but then again, 600++ of memory shouldnt run low of resources...
hmm...
Try opening the player and then open the Task Manager check the CPU Usage.. IT shouldn't be anywhere near high.. If its high that means something is running in the background..

It's hard if not impossible to shut down all the open processes in 2000. This is more than likely what is causing your skips. I run dual CPU's and 512 meg of memory, and I get skips just like yours.
One thing that you can do is go into your performance settings and set everything to dedicate more memory and cpu to open applications, that has helped me tremendously. I rarely get a skip now.
There are a ton of other things that can help this also. Remember that when you are playing an MP3 you are using more of your system than you realise. You are using a ton of CPU to decode and decompress the actual file, and render it to sound. You're then using more of your cpu to power your sound card. Then your using up video memory to play any visualizations, especially if youre using them hoky ones that come with Media Player 7 and better.
Turn off any player visualizations. Set your sound card settings to performance and not quality. (With the great quality that you have ripped these at you're not going to notice the difference, especially through a good card). Set your CPU and Memory settings, turn off other things that you have in the background, like virus scans. This will probably all but kill those skips.

hmm... The amount of System resources are seperate from the amount of ram you have avalible.Resources are a 128 KB area of memory that is used for things like apps ect...:)
