I just bought a D-Link DFE-530TX+ network card and when i installed it i started the comp and it was detected. i put in the floppy and installed the driver. everything seemed ok then i tried to get online. my modem had disappeared! so i restarted the computer to see if that would help. right when the log on screen appeard i got blue screen with stop error BAD_POOL_DATA. i restarted several times but i wouldnt get past this. so i tried setting my cpu back to 600, though it must be a pci bus problem. that didnt help. so i removed the card, i could log in to windows 2000 but i kept getting random lockups. it seemed to lock when i started IE or tried to get into device manager and other more random ones.
by now Im thinking oh $#!t what has happened. so i put in the w2k disk and performed a repair. and here i am, everything seems to be ok for now. So what the heck happend? should i try to install it again but this time try something different or returne the pos.
My guess would be an IRQ conflict. Check and see if there are any problems there. If not that, try putting it ina different pci slot
I had a similar problem with that back in the day when my dad brought home an old p2 233 to upgrade our p120 with. It had 1 10Mb ethernet card in it that apparrantly really screwed with the modem and made it run at more like 5kbps than 56kbps. Solved the problem by junking the ethernet card. I doubt you want to solve your problem with that though.
Oh, and this thread really belongs in general hardware

Update:
it still locks up when i try to go into device manager. so i cant get in there to check or change anything
sorry about putting the post in the wrong place. i meant to put it in general hardware but i guess i just wasnt thinking. is there a way to move it
S'okay, we'll forgive you this once.;)
Try booting into safe mode to get into the device manager. You might try removing it from the device manager, then powering down your PC, and moving it to another PCI slot. Give that a go.

I had a card that was doing the same thing.
I went into the properties for the adapter, in the
network advanced properties, not the device manager,
and changed it from auto speed to 10 full.
This stopped the lockups completely, since I only had
a 10 hub, I didnt need 10/100 on the card...
eew...sounds nasty. That ethernet card really messed with your system. You may not want to do this, but I always say, "When all else fails, format c:"
Do I put that in quotes if I said it? I dunno...
Anyways, I don't know what the solution would be. Your system obviously dislikes that card, or at least the place you have put the card. When weird stuff happens with me, I move all my important files and start over:D . If you do that, you could at least be sure there is no remaining issues due to the card residing in your system. If you decide to go this route, see if you could get everything, including the card, working before you start spending time installing software.
Ooh, random thought! I have heard that placing the ethernet card adjacent to the modem makes for some bad problems. Do you have the card directly above or below your modem? Try putting a little distance between them. This would explain why the modem stopped working. The conflicting devices would explaiin the instability.

after removing the card and restoring a backup of w2k. i tryed to go into device manager and it locked up! this was with my cup at default 600mhz. this thing has been at 900 for as long as i can remenber so i thought what the hey ill bump it back up and see what blows up. Now everything seems to be working ok!!!
my modem is on the very bottom isa slot. i have another isa shared with a pci above that. i didnt put the network card on the shared pci but the next one up. i though that was far enough away. should i try going further up? Im not sure i want to try again after the mess it caused the first time
this card is free after rebates but i dont think it is worth it. i am thinking of taking it back now. but if i were to try again what would you suggest i do. i am overclocked (as in sig) and restored from backup from a month ago. and network card is out.

yea, for some reason when i put my netgear mixed with my creative modem i'd bsod and lock up, particularly when i went online. however, if i connected my rig to a cable modem, it'd work fine. so, leave the nic card out unless you actually have to use it or it's actually being used.
