View Full Version : is rubbing compound the right paste to use to polish newly painted metal?

here in australia, the only thing similar that I've seen is "repo water rubbing compound". I know that online guides (mainly US-based sites) have recommended 3M.
Is this the one to use?

Not unles your trying to "cut" the paint.
Most rubbing compounds have an abrasive in them to cut the old layer of oxidized paint.
Are you trying to bring up a shine on a case?

yes.
these guide uses 3m perfect-it rubbing compound on a newly painted case.

Wow. I stand corrected sir. I had thought that a rubbing compound would cut more and scratch, but obviously not. That just shows me I can learn something every day. Thank you.
The best bet is to paint a piece of scrap material and try it out. It's much more fun than starting over with your case.
I'd also let the paint fully harden at least a couple of days before polishing it, so it's not so soft. I've taken paint down to the primer learning on that mistake. :rolleyes:

it all depends on the 'grit' of the compound ... the finish-it .. one you mentioned is an ultra fine peice ... for removing those final little scratches and bring a shine to the paint ...
