Hi everyone. I have a Geforce 9800 Pro AIW. Lately, almost everytime I try playing a game or running a graphics package, I get vertical lines or a checker board pattern of garbage on my screen. When I reboot everything goes back to normal. DVDs play fine. I reinstalled an older drive image hoping that it was a DirectX or driver problem, only to have it continue. I think it might be my video card itself. Anyone have any suggestions or answers? Please help.

I would say it sounds like it's overheating or perhaps just going bad?

Do you know what your idle and load temps are on the card?
Maybe get yourself some Arctic Silver 5 (or equivalent) and try reseating the heatsink.

It might be overheating. I've had the card for about 3-1/2 years now, and this is the first time it happened. The card is modified. I have been so busy with other things that I have neglected my system. I used to be an overclocker and tweaker. I haven't opened my case in almost a year! It could be dust, the fan, or the heatsink needs to be reseated. I'll take a look later today. Thanks :)

BTW, Incase I need to buy another card, what would you suggest for an AGP 4X system?

I concur with jivetrky. It sounds like the card is overheating. Check that the fan is still working, and blow out the heatsinks with compressed air/chemicals. If its overclocked, drop it to stock speeds.

Hi everyone. I have a Geforce 9800 Pro AIW
i guess the first question should be... which card do you actually have?

It was overheating! The Giant II mechanism for mounting the large heatsinks to the block is flawed. Two diagnally mounted screws hold the mounting block to the CPU die. If you use paste instead of a pad, tempurture change or case aggitation can dislodge the bond between the die and the heat sink base. Now that is what happened. It was fine for about 2 years. That was the last time that I messed with my rig. Be aware of this situation!

Thank you for your help!!

I have to add... Look at my Sig... This system is not top of the line and as aged as it is, has done me very well over the years. PERFECT would be the word that I would like to use.
