I don't know why, but every time I install CPUs, I stress and .. after I'm done I feel like I had an extensive work out...
I guess I'm too worried about not putting the right amount of thermal compound and worried each time I hit the motherboard with the screwdriver...
Anybody had that before ? :)
I've installed just 4 heatsinks so far, so it might be a beginner thing... or it's just me.
So, anyway.. here
Volcanos are harder to install compared to Dynatrons in terms of attaching them to the motherboard. But Volcanos are also MUCH QUIETER YESSS ! :)
I had to use 2 screw drivers to install the clamps. One to press the clamp down (that's why I hit the motherboard several times.. eeekkkk ).... Another one to push out the clamp so it could slide onto the socket. Without pushing out the clamp was firmly pressing into the socket and wouldn't clamp on.
phew, so there I am ..
I got a noise reduce from 88 dBC (decibels using C weighing) down to 75 dBC when measured in between 2 heatsinks (I have a dual processor motherboard)
Measured directly in front of my computer's closed case I got a reduce from ~80 dBA down to 70 dBA (decibels using A weiging now).
A weighing is constructed according to human sensitivity to different frequencies. (500-10,000Hz)
C weighing evenly spans out several octaves of frequencies, meaning that it accounts for overall noise, especially lower-frequencies. (20-10,000Hz)
However, neither A nor C scales measure the loudness of the noise (though they come close) and they don't measure the irritability of the noise (whiny sounds). But anyway, Volcanos are pretty quiet.
WOW ! I JUST REALIZED ! ! I can HEAR OTHER computers in the room NOW ! I couldn't before -- Deltas were shutting them out hehe. That means Volcanos are pretty quiet... .. hmm after Deltas that is too hehe.
Volcanos probably could be compared to case fans.. if not quieter, don't know, didn't measure it specifically, but sounds like it.
So
there it IS ! :)

Yeah Volcanos are very quiet!! I love my 6cu...

how did you use and need two screwdrivers?? I can't figure out how you would do that!!

2 screw drivers
One to push the clamp down -- probably everybody does that unless the clamp is easy to reach or is BIG enough.
It was hard to reach and hard to push it down ..
When I pushed the clamp down it would push on the socket (where it's supposed to clamp down) and wouldn't go any further.
If I would apply more force, my screwdriver would crash into the motherboard -- I DID NOT ! like that. Usually the clamp snaps down, but for some reason it wouldn't that time.... Unless I would apply more force I guess, and I didn't want to.
Well, I though about it a bit and then decided to use another screwdriver to help the clamp snap down. That is, angle it out so it would clear off the socket and then snap down.

At one point I had to push one screwdriver with my teeth ... with my lips in between the screw driver and the teeth...(for padding, in case the screw driver would snap out -- I didn't want any broken teeth <EG>) Also the screwdriver was supported by the wall of the case. Antec 1040 -- great case ! :)
Oh yah, Don't try the above home ! Really, it's dangerous.. hehe
So I probably would look funny at that moment hmm.m
I didn't have to use teeth for the first CPU, but did for the 2nd one.
