is it ok to do dual channel with seperately bought packages of the same ram?

reason being that i can buy 2 seperate 512mb modules cheaper than 1 package of 2x512 (from buy.com so i can take advantage of the $20 google checkout thing).

or do i have to use the one where they package two together?

You don't have to buy dual channel kit to have memory running in dual channel mode. Two seperate same memory will work as well in dual channel. Usually dual channel kits cost a little less than two single memory sticks purchased individually.

That isn't your choice. If your MOBO supports dual channel, and you install matching (spec wise) chips (whether they are a dual channel "kit" or not) then they will run in dual channel mode. You can not turn dual channel on and off.
