Let me explain my setup:

Over my PIII ( a 850E running at 977 MHz with 2.00 Vcore) is a CoolerMaster CB5-5G12

Heat Sink Dimensions L52 x W50 x H25 (mm)
FAN Dimensions 50 x 50 x 10 (mm)
Rated Voltage 12 VDC
Rated Speed 4500 RPM
Air Flow 9.18 CFM
Noise Level 30.5 dB(A)

Not one of the best coolers but gets the job done. I attached to this HSF a 52 W Peltier. With all this hardware my CPU was sitting happily crunching SETI WU all day at 35°C. The other day I've got a problem and SETI stopped and I manage to get my idle tempertaure around 22°C.

I was very happy with this setup, but yesterday I returned home and found that my computer had freezed and the space near my PC felt like a furnance. A quick restart confirmed that the tempertaure of the CPU has rised from 35 to over 50. I opened the case and checked the fan form the HS and found it working all right. I restarted crunching and after 30 minutes the temperature continued to rise over 45, so I turned off my computer.

After some struggling, I removed the peltier and restarted. NOw my CPU is running at 44°C with SETI running. And I found no problem with the HSF. Any ideas of what could have happened?

i recon the peltier is broken

I have serious doubts about that heatsink disbursing the heat of an overclocked processor and a 52Watt peltier. I would be willing to bet the peltier broke down eventually from overheating. As far as the chip running hotter without the pelt, I'd say that's just common sense. :D I'd say get a larger heatsink with a more powerful fan, or else go to watercooling before attempting a peltier again.

This night I shall try the peltier and see if it broke or not. I will be changing shortly to a new mobo and I'm considering a watercooling setup.....maybe when I have played enough with it I shall put a new 72 W peltier over it.

Great! Let us know the results when you get it up and running!

This more odd than I thought. First the Pelt seems OK, I tried it using it without anyother attachment and it quickly began to cool down after I plug it (kids don't try to run your pelt for more than a few seconds without a fan).

Also when I checked the temperatures with only the HSF I noticed that they have leveled at 50°C (It used to be 44°C before the pelt). So I'm very confused.

I forgot to say that I changed the stock fan from the coolermaster to a Top Motor 50mmX50mmX20mm, 5800 rpm, 19.5 cfm, 33 dBA.

1.-The pelt works.
2.-I have enough juice.
3.-The fan from the heastsink its OK.

And the temperatures are too high!!!!! I might also add that I have a 120mm fan blowing outside air exactly to the CPU HSF and I have removed the side panel from the case. I will be needing to check all my system this next weekend.

a peltier needs to have very good cooling, you should look into getting a new hs/f. also you may want to check to make sure that the peltier has enough power, if you are only running a single psu for the computer hardware, and the peltier you may need a 400+w psu with alot of amps on the +12v line.
