View Full Version : What is the frickin' point of those stupid ACR slots?

AMR, CNR, ACR, none of it matters because
1. you can't find cards to plug into them
2. anything you could find would suck anyway!

So what's the deal with them? Whose bright idea were they? Are these gonna be like the good ol' EISA slots or the VESA local bus was? Or that funky AMB slot on old asus boards....what was it...the asus media bus I think? Man, talk about some useless crapola. Ok this IS a question so it's here instead of gripes, I'm just baffled that's all.

i know there r very cheap AMR modems for that AMR slot which is mostly purposed to be sold as an oem equipment; they r also not difficult to get.
perhaps if you still have your motherboard manual (and if the mobo has one of that slots of course) you will get a comprehensive description of them.

I thought I rememberd seeing an ad for a sound card that used an ACR slot, but I'm not positive.

Yeah, mine doesn't even have a slot but an old that I had does. I'm curious.

My mobo has one (I think ALL asus mobo's have them). They are completely useless. I plug my root hub into the spot where the AMR is (well, not plug it in. Just mount it.)

Another thing about those AMR slots is that anything that plugs into them is going to steal some of your cpu cycles. They are there so that the oem's can put cheap-a** modems or sound cards in the box and save money.

The reason for haveing the non-PCI slots is to allow more backwards compatibility. I have some old cards from way back when that I could plug into some of those if I wanted to.
Although for most of use we would be better off with an extra PCI slot instead.

To Slow Down Your Computer
You can waste upto 15-20% of your resources on a modem or soundcard thats AMR.

Stay away.....!

20%!! That's terrible. My motherboard has an AMR slot so I plugged in a modem into it to save a pci slot, but I had no idea it slowed down the cpu. Does it slow down the CPU only while the modem is connected to the internet, or always?

AMR= Audio Modem Riser
CNR=Communications and Networking Riser

CNR pretty much replaced AMR. As I understand it, it's slightly cheaper to an OEM to buy 1000 CNR modems than 1000 PCI modems. It's not cheaper unless you're dealing with high volume. They suck CPU cycles, winmodem-style, and more importantly, they are proprietary. The socket is mechanically the same on all boards, but the pinouts are totally different.

So, if you could even find something for that slot, it probably wouldn't work, and if you did get it to work, it would probably suck.

I don't quite see why board makers put these on boards intended for the hobbyists like us- we ain't gonna use this thing, ever. So why not just leave it off and save us a buck?

Stupid OEMs! Alright, this clears it all up for me. Hopefully we'll see these slots go the way of the dinosaur like EISA and AMB slots did years ago. No wonder most good motherboards for hobbyists (like us!) don't have 'em! I sound like a hypocrite when I say this cuz I use onboard RAID but integrated peripherals mostly suck as far as I've seen. They're for people like my stupid girlfriend who has that blasted virtual pet and turns on her comp just to "feed" the ****ing thing. Or those people who hit the elevator call or walk buttons repeatedly; like the control will say 'hey I was gonna do my own thing but now I take pity on this jacka$$ who's obviously in a hurry'. Ok this thread'll end up in gripes if I keep this up......10-4 over & out.
