View Full Version : phone line filters
A friend of mine is switching from cable to DSL. He wants to know if the only place he can get the filter (to seperate regular phone signals from the DSL signals) is from the service provider or can he get them at electronics stores. I've never worked with DSL so I don't know. So I'm asking the rest of you. So, do you have to get the filters from the ISP or are there other sources to get them from?

you dont have to use the ones from the ISP. You can pick them up at places like Radio Shack, even the Walmat here carries them.
Thanks.
Just a couple tips for hooking up the DSL. Don't use a splitter for the jack that the DSL modem is on. Make sure everything is fitlered at the jack. Satelite, Phones, Direct TV, etc. If he has an alarm system he may need an RJ31-X filter, but test it without it.
Don't use anything longer than 10' for the phone cable and no extention cords. Also, if they have a lot of jacks in the home, it might be wise to ask about a homerun. (A direct, high grade phone cable from NID to the telephone jack, with the rest of the devices filtered off).
Make sure the DSL Modem can breathe.
Most of this is common sense, and I'm sure you both know, but just in case.
