View Full Version : Setting up 2 HDs in WinMe?
I've got a 60gig drive partitioned and setup on my computer and would like to add a 40gig drive for storage, maybe WinXP,etc...How do I go about this? When I run fdisk it says Fixed drive setup on top, with "current fixed disk drive 1" I have data on my 60gig which I do not want to lose all I want to do is add the 40gig drive as drive G to my existing setup. Thanks for help in advance
Anyone, please!I don't understand the screen showing me my partitioning info and I hope I have not deleted or screwed up my existing drive.I am waiting to get out of fdisk or restart until I can get some help understanding what's going on.I NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE!
If both drives are in the bios as master (60gig) slave (otherdrive)
in fdisk you should have an option#5 change target drive or something like that.and hit#2 to change drives,I hav'nt done this in a while so I hope this helps.

Tbone got you started right. Change from drive 1 (that's your 60G) to drive 2 (that will be the 40G). I always like to use the "view partition information" before I do anything, just to make sure my eyeballs are working right and I'm not about to trash my main drive.
Now it should show the current drive as 2. You can view the information and it should show nothing. Assuming you're setting it up as a secondary drive with, say, 2 partitions, select create partition. Then create *extended* partition. It will want to know how much space you wish to use. Let's say both of our imaginary partitions will be equally 20G. You can type 50% (don't forget the % sign).
When it's through with that, it will automatically want to create a logical drive within the new partition. Go ahead and follow through with that, giving all 20G to the logical drive.
Work your way back to the main menu for drive 2. Repeat the above steps (the only difference being, when you create the extended partition this time, you will wish to use 100% of the available space which is 50% of the total on the disk). Create partition, create extended partition, create logical drive. That should be all the fdisk you need.
When you exit, it will tell you to restart and format. Do that. Reboot. Voila! 2 more 20G partitions to add to the party. :)
Hopefully I've included everything here. I just finished one about 90 minutes ago and my memory is fuzzy already.
EDIT
I totally ignored the part about you setting up a 2nd OS. (I really need to try sleep sometime.) Not sure if double-booting would require another primary partition. I'm sure someone will stop in to straighten this out.
