Decent 2 Speaker set

I currently have a very nice sounding $60 Altec Lansing set of 2 speakers and a subwoofer.

I would like to get my little brother a nice pair a speakers for Christmas, although they do not need to have a subwoofer.

I have had a great experience with Altec Lansing, in quality and life span.

Are there any better options from any manufacturer for 30-40$?
