I know, I know...what am I still doing using dialup. If your neighborhood were surrounded by cornfield too, you'd be in this boat with me.

Anyway, once in a while, my modem will just take off for few minutes without loading anything new or hitting/hovering over any links, and not even updating ad banners.

Is there any software that can tell me what to heck the modem is talking to? Maybe an IP or URL?
I'm just curious. I don't think it's doing anything dangerous, but I'd like to know what/where it's off to.

BTW, if it helps, I use XP Pro sp2 (fully updated-took 3 days) and FireFox 2 (the new one downloaded last week) so it's not IE doing the devil's evil bidding (I think).

Again, I'm not paranoid, just curious. Any help would be appreciated.

click on start, run, type cmd, hit enter

type without quotes "netstat -a"
press enter

now do the same but with a -b
you can see what your computer is talking to

there are also lots of sniffer programs outthere for example Etheral

I had to laugh because I live in what was a cornfield up until about 2 years ago :temper:. Got broadband now though. Had to suffer through dial-up for about 2 months and then a WISP for a year and a half but now I have cable!!

You lucky...
I guess since none of the houses in our little town are valued over $200,000, we'll never have broadband (been waiting since before broadband was invented!, 16 years).
Of course the tiny little towns 3 miles to the north, south, and east of us have a choice between cable and DSL, so no-one has bothered building a WISP
