Well, this is my 1st time overclocking a computer and I ran into a problem.. I have a 233mhx Pentium with 128 sdram it is a socket 7 cpu. I set my dip switches to the following. #3 on #8 on and left the rest off. I booted up the computer and everything was going good, I got a black screen and it said...windows protection error loading configmg...please restart the computer. I had noticed that my cpu speed went from 233mhx to 266mhx a slight gain of 33mhx. What do I need to do to fix this error???? Is there anyother way of making this machine faster and if so how much faster..any help is great.
THanks

The error that you got is probably your computer telling you that your overclock isn't working. Even though it is only a small jump, it may not work.
We would need more specifics on yours system specs...Power supply, motherboard, etc.
For now, the only thing that comes to mind is trying to raise the voltage a little and see if that helps. I don't know how you would do this without more information.
Remember, doing any of this could seriously damage your computer, so be aware of the risks.

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!
Now, what kind of motherboard are you using in there??? Also, what are you using for CPU cooling?
It sounds like you raised the multiplier on that chip. You may not either have good enough cooling or it may need more voltage going into the processor... look in your motherboard manual to see if there is anything in there about voltage (Vcore) adjustments.

I am not sure of the processor, but I do have a heat sink with a coolmaster fan. I also installed a new large case fan and it sits very close to the cpu. I pulled a jumper plug off of the jumpers next to the cpu, I then set my dip switch to #3 on and #8 on, when I booted up it said I was running at 263.09mhx so I did something right. How would I change the voltage??? And can I increase my speed anymore? I do not have a manual for the motherboard so I am flying by the seat of my pants.... THanks for the help...
Welcome. :)
We're going to need more info about the motherboard to help. Telling us the setting of switches 3 & 8 does nothing if we don't know what those switches do. Who's the manufacturer of the board and what's the model number?

I am looking at the board right now but not sure where to look......From what I can see it says GMB -P56IPS V2
I am using an intel chipset SB82437vx chipset
There is also another number on the board: pam-00561-e2
I don't know if this helps.
Not a lot. I've never heard of a 437vx chipset, I have no idea who used them. I'll look around the net.
I see you're a new member, did you pay your membership fees in American or just send an extra $10 Canadian to make up for the exchange rate?
(Hey skip, I suckered one more for you, remember my cut of the action. :D)
***edit: GMB may mean Gigabyte MotherBoard.
Found one link to a copy of the manual, unfortunately the link is dead. If you want to try later it's here (ftp://ftp.hongfaith.com/manuals/56ie2e52.zip).
