One of my teacher's wants to get a laptop for his daughter when she goes to college. She'll probably use it mostly just for schoolwork, so she doesn't need the latest and greatest stuff (like a Geforce2Go or something like that). Relatively fast (of course!) and very reliable. Suggestions please
Thanks in advance.

i would suggest a DELL, my dad did the chipsets for them

very nice

go to DELL sight and type in VAUGHN WATTS, thats my dad

it has a article about how they meet the needs of the consumer

makes you feel good about the product

I have had 2 laptops, a Toshiba and a Dell. Both were good, but if/when I get another it will probably be a Dell, and here are my reasons:
Dell makes quality, stable laptops
Support is good
Hardware compatibility is often good

Their portable systems tend to be average to slightly above average performers at a reasonable price, with good features.

Basically, IMHO, while Dell's portables are not the best at anything, overall they do more , better than any other.

I'm on my second Dell Laptop, kept the first 1 for three years before it was just too freaking slow. ;) They make good laptops with real good displays and the tech support is great. Be sure to upgrade to the 3 year warrantee though; it's worth it if anything breaks. I had the LCD backlight and part of the plastic front on the floppy drive break after about 2 1/2 years. Sent the laptop to Dell at their expense for the LCD screen on a Thursday, it was returned to me the following Monday before noon. For the floppy drive, they shipped me a replacement and I sent the old floppy back to them in the box the replacement came in, all at their expense.

I had a Dell Latitude laptop for 2 years and never had a problem with it. Now I have a Sony Vaio and that's been a great machine so far as well...

I repair Dell Latitudes. There are some other nice Laptops out there, but Dell makes good ones. They are a breese to take apart, unlike some others(Compaq)

Dell sells some of its surplus at http://www.dellauctions.com They usually have some PII@400+ in there. My favorite is the CPt, not as bulky as some but with more power than others.
