OC Communitry,

I see boards out for Xeon socket 603..what are these boards? Are they support for the Pentium IV XEON Prestonia .13 micron 512k beasts?? Or are they of the 4 or 8 way Xeon line...? Can someone enlighten me?

Socket 603 is a teensy-tinsey little socket for Pentium IV-derived Xeon processors. This is the only packaging that P4 Xeons are built for. Very few motherboards have them yet. The only chipsets you'll really find on these motherboards are Intel i860 Rambus chipset and one or two ServerWorks chipsets.

Not sure about the .13 Prestonia thing, though...I know one of the ServerWorks chipset does support .13 P4 Xeon parts.

And finally, pics of what a Socket 603 motherboard looks like.

This one (about half way down the page) is an Abit with ServerWorks chipset.

This one's my fave :D Gigabyte with the Intel 860 "Plumas" which will be out soon - look at all the memory controllers/peripheral components! Wow!

FlyingRat,

Thanks alot for the info and reply... I had seen that Anandtech page..but you raise an interesting point.. Does the socket 603 platform with the Intel 860 chipset include support for the Next Generation.. Nothwork Type .13 micro Xeons??

I guess I haven't heard much either about the Plumas or the .13 Xeons - they're kind of low-key items....only the most expensive workstations and servers use this kind of equipment, so the public doesn't hear much of it. Off searching we go!

OC Community,

I also have another question perhaps of more interest.. what have you heard of the Plumas Chipsets? I have a server roadmap that mentions them..and will they be just a new 860 chipset with support for PCIX and DDR and Infiniband?? I notice also that they come out after the 870 enabled chipset. curiousier..and curiousier..
