I tried out the Vista beta drivers from ATi and neither of them work, they both cause artifacts in games such as Counter-Strike: Source and other 3d applications. Has anybody found a fix to this problem?

Hah, I was just about to post a thread asking the same thing.
My friend is having the same trouble as I am and what's kinda funny is he has the same exact video card and monitor you have.
Anyway, I am trying to get CS 1.6 to work in Vista (I have an X700 Pro and dual 19inch monitors).
Here is what I have found so far:
Standard X700 driver that loads with Vista: Aero works, system boots nicely with the dual monitors, except one thing when booting I get these orange pixelated artifacts right before it boots. In CS 1.6 as soon as I open it, it crashes into software mode then gets totally artifacted to the point where I can't even find options in the menu.
ATi's beta vista driver: Same thing as the one that comes with Vista
Catalyst 6.1 driver for Windows XP: Works very nice, I am running CS 1.6 in openGL at 1280X1024, no problems at all except that it will BSOD during boot up if I have my second monitor on.
All is not as perfect as it sounds though, Aero won't work with this driver. :(
One interesting thing though, is with this it shows up in the device manager as ATi X700 Pro and ATi X700 Pro Secondary. It did it that way in XP as well, but both Vista drivers only show one ATi X700.

I have the Vista Beta drivers (ones released in early November) they work perfectly fine in most games. Only thing im having issues with is with 1 game and the 3D to 2D switch when leaving it. It either causes a hang in the application or a hardlock of the comptuer which sucks because i have to restart no matter what then. Sometimes it will do it but others it just sits there dumb.
BTW with the second monitor I've seen it show up else where but now I can't remember where I've seen it. I know it had a ! by it once but I can't find it. Maybe its only shown when a second monitor is present.
As well Aero works perfectly fine for me.

Is there a way I could possibly force activate Aero with this XP driver? Just out of curiosity to see if it works.

Not sure I know i've heard somewhere that people got XP drivers to install.
I know Aero does work with ATI's latest released driver in 32-bit vista build 5744 and if not mistaken i had it installed on the 5600 version as well. I'm showing Aero all over the place here http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=487076 I got many screens of it up and running, as well it worked with the default drivers on my card at least that came with Vista.

Oh yea, I can get Aero to work with all the latest Vista drivers, and even the one that loaded with Vista, it is just that with all of those, I can't play CS, I get this horrendous pixelated artifacted screen shortly following a crash into software mode.
So the only thing I can do to get CS working is to use the XP catalyst driver which unfortunately doesn't allow Aero to work. :(

I think I have it figured out with CS1.6, ATi's Vista drivers don't support OpenGL yet.

Oh didn't even think about taht. I know when I do select OpenGL actually in one program it works, but its DOG slow.

It is running just like it did in XP for me, but thats cause I am using the XP catalyst driver in Vista, so no Aero :( But openGL works nice. :D
