Hi ive got an AMD 3400 PC which i bought a few months ago and to be honest the things i use it for now i need to upgrade. I do quite a bit of Encoding and DVD editing.

So im thinking of going to Intel Dual Core so i need to change my Motherboard and get a new Processor. Ive been looking around and found this CPU http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=14431&GroupID=1675

Just wanted to see what other people think of it and if it is a load of ........ could you point me in the right direction.

Now if i am going to go with that particular Processor im getting a bit confused on the motherboard i need not too sure which one i would need to get.

If you guys could help me out a bit it would be very much appreciated. Thank you

And just for the record which one is the better CPU the AMD 4200 or that one i gave a link too.

Thank you

The CPU you linked to is not a Core 2 Duo. This is the one I would recommend.

There are countless "which motherboard?" threads. What kind of budget and what features do you want? The Asus P5B Deluxe and Gigabyte DS3 are a couple popular choices.

You will also need DDR2 RAM, preferably PC2-6400, and a vid card that is PCI-E. Also, you will need a good PSU.

Hi yes i didn't want a core 2 duo, but the one i posted the link to is dual core though isn't it. Anyway lol now i am thinking of going to a core 2 duo.

One question is why are these more expensive even when they run at a slower speed or so it seems.

Example the one you showed me it runs at 2.13ghz but the one i showed you runs at 3.4ghz could you please explain this to me.

Thank you

What you linked is a pressler (netburst) it has considerbly less instructions per cycle (it does less work per Ghz) then a core 2 duo so the higher Ghz are less usefull.
That and core 2 duo's scale easier with the same cooling when overclocking :sn: mmmmm :D more % overclock.

So is Core 2 Duo worth getting?

well... it has the highest instructions per cycle per core of any CPU, and it overclocks better.
basicly.. yes ;)

Still not sure which processor to go with, the things i do on my pc is encoding video files, burning all that DVD stuff im not going worry about over clocking my pc.

Like i said above ive got an AMD 3400 pc at the moment and want to move to an Intel Dual Core weather it be that or the Core 2 Duo Processors not sure yet.

Its either going to be the Intel Dual Core Processor
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=14431&GroupID=1675
or
the Core 2 Duo Processor
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=14433&GroupID=1674

Which ever one will suit my need the best.

I also need a new motherboard and some DDR2 ram, could anyone post a couple of links to some Ram for me for BOTH Processors please.

Would i need to upgrade any other parts of my existing computer if i was to get either CPU.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Does this answer your question?
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2795&p=12

You shouldn't even be considering a netbust processor at this point. Even the 1.86ghz Core 2 slaps around the P4.

sorry still don't understand fully, im new.

So what are you actually saying? what did you mean by You shouldn't even be considering a netbust processor at this point. Even the 1.86ghz Core 2 slaps around the P4.

sorry for all the posts just want to get a bit better idea of things.

The E6300 even with a mild OC will smack the crap out of old Intel CPU's. And mild where talking about a 1Gigs OC from 1.83Ghz (stock) to 2.8Ghz.

C2D's are by far the best preformance CPU's out, AMD's systems would be next followed decently close by the old P4 line (the 900 sieres). Yes it might be a little more expensive but it will last you for a while.

ok thanks for that, thinking quite seriously at getting the Core 2 Duo now.

You know you said the E6300 would smack the crap out of the old Intel CPUs if it was overclocked, what about if it wasent at all. How would it fair to them then.

Now i need some Ram DDR2, ive been looking for some but not sure which one to get http://www.microdirect.co.uk/productlister.aspx?GroupID=1113 could someone help me out.

Is their anything else i need to upgrade.

thanks

Last thing just need some help about Ram.

The Core 2 Duo is the best thing since sliced bread. Definitely get one. If you get the E6300 and want to O/C with low voltage and stock cooling, then 400 FSB (2.8 gig) is pretty much easy and perfectly safe. You should get PC2-6400 RAM that is rated DDR2-800 and preferably has CAS 4 timing. I was looking at the website you posted earlier and saw Geil has a special offer right now (see link). That should work for you if you want 2X1GB.
