View Full Version : World's Worst Clocking 7900gs

Sometimes I just have to laugh at how bad my luck can be some times. After puncuting my rad (of course ruining it) one week ago, today I recieved all the replacement parts and after transfering my parts over to a new setup my AIW X1800 died for the fifth time (yes F-I-F)

So enraged as usual I went on a quest to never buy ATi again and bought a $150 7900GS. What am I rewarded with?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/Sentential/7900gsfromhell.jpg

Sometimes my bad luck never ceases to amaze me keep in mind those clocks are on water @ 38C idle. :santa: Atleast the setup is almost finished. (and looks nice to boot)

I thought the 7900s were insane clockers... may have to put a pencil to it... if there is a pencil mod that is...

Lol the only pencil this card will see is at the return line of compusa. I seriously doubt this thing would pass on stock cooling. Ill take my chances with another card lol

Is this the PNY 7900GS thats been off and on sale at B&Ms lately?

its not the card its the bios.

my card BLOWS on overclocking with the new bios

you can use coolbits anymore. must use ntune to overclock the video card

Valk

you can use rivatuner to oc that card. or the ati tool beta. should be able to get around 500 out of it with stock volts at least..

Yikes those are bad clocks, especially for the ram. My Hynix 1.4 does 1750 easy, not to mention my Core came clocked at 540 from the Factory...

There's an easy volt mod for the 7900's that use the reference PCB, unfortunatly the PNY isn't one of them.

Valk
12-03-06, 10:39 PM
Try rivatuner for sure, but its not unheard of to have a bad clocker. mine came 450 stock, but it is entirely possible to get one that is just so bad it wont clock more than that.
I think there is a voltmod over at rage3d for the pny. I still wanna know how people are getting their ram so much higher without a voltmod, mine wont budge =\

Sentential are you sure that after blowing 5 cards and getting a poor overclocker your not doing something wrong?

Maby that Antec is putting out crappy power and taking out Graphics cards?

he's tried 3 diff systems with his cards... i think his brain is putting out static signals into the air and shorts something out... i told him to wear his anti-static helmet, but he just doesn't believe me!!

Tried that, I get to about 475 and it hardlocks. Ram wont budge either

Yea i know hence while its going back. FYI this ram wont do 1.39 without hardlocking.

Thats possible but as godman has said ive tried multiple setups without any success (went three power supplies etc)

That last X1800 was a smokin clocker shame it bit the dust.

Well maybe you should stop playing video games! These cards are not meant to run 32 hours a day, 8 days a week!!

I have the PNY 7900GS and it does 560, which isnt too bad, but isnt as great as the others i've seen. It also has the Hynix 1.4 memory like the other's, but it'll only do 1440Mhz or so(tight memory timings maybe??)...@ 1460 it'll artifact and freeze and reboot my PC. it would probably fly with some more voltage, too bad PNY did follow the reference PCB. I hope some1 figures out how to voltmod a PNY.

PS. if you can post a link to rage3d's voltmod for a PNY that'd be helpful, Im looking for it but cannot find it. ty

You can always tweak the BIOS on that card by relaxing timings a little, thus giving you higher OC rates.

You will need NvFlash and NiBitor 3.1.

i don't see how that makes anything better.... you'd get higher clocks but it won't help gain more performance... thus defeating the whole purpose of relaxing the timings.

Depends on the timings, you might have to change cas2 to cas3 and thats all. Thus you still gained good performance. Just have to test it to see what work the best for your card.

After some digging:

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=98874&page=9

maybe this will work for you. apparently, it uses the same board layout as the pny. Click the previous page to see layouts of this particular card and compare it to yours.

that link cited from:

Hope these help.

and i wouldn't be surprised if a card that bad started artifacting on certain games at stock speeds...

sen, i'm glad you exchanged that card... i would never keep a card that BARELY overclocked... makes me feel like the card may not work as advertised someday... gotta have some headroom with ANYTHING you buy IMO. ratings should always be AT LEAST slightly less than actual performance... and urs was way too close to spec.

your much better to go with somthing like the evga/xfx/bfg/anyothermakerusingreference for simplicity sake. the volt mods are straight forward, and you will get a hell of a great card for the money. But i have seen some people doing well with the palif. I didnt read those threads i posted through completly for performence, but im sure they just like any other gs when you get aggressive.

I fried my biostar I got from the egg so I went to BB and picked up the PNY. Man that card was a garbage OC'r. Got back on NE and saw the EVGA for the same price so I got that one and that is the best of the 3 I had by far. Running speeds in my sig with no mods and not even pushing it. Actually the slider on the memory wont let me go any further so I don't even know it's limits. I don't care right now because I don't want to fry another one. I'm going to do the trade in for the DX10 in a few months anyway.

I have no idea how that works though. Can anyone tell me how to trade up at EVGA? I did register with them after I got the card.

wow... 630mhz gpu from stock 450mhz... all with stock volts, lol... man nvidia cards really OC like crazy sometimes.

my x1800 and x1900 needed more voltage to go up... only OCed a tad bit with stock vcore...

i swear i woulda stuck a 7900gs or gt into my system if only it did HDR+AA. I'm really glad nVidia has that option now for the 8 series at least... which may win me over next time i'm ready to upgrade.

Interesting if this is truly a brand issue I think I will take both of them back. Not just for the fact that they barely auto above stock but to make a point that I do not approve of how PNY does its buisness.

There's a BFG on sale here for $199 I think ill go with that.

+1 and to be honest I'd take a look at XFX as well. Take a look at the reviews out there. They are known to clock high as ish. I didn't get one because I was trying to make up for the shipping I lost on the RMA from trying to go with a no-name brand then having it fry. My XFX 6800XT went from 350/1000 to 450/1250 althought this EVGA I have is great as well.

Well I have only ever owned 4 cards since I got back into PC's and -

XFX - Great clocker but loud fan and ran hot as he!! (blow dryer fan, seriously)
Biostar 7900 GS - Fried
PNY 7900 GS - All around P.O.S.
Evga - I give it a 9 out of 10. If it came with a good silent fan there is nothing I bad I could say. Although in all honestly the first thing I did was take it off and put my silencer on so I never really heard it lol. Just going by the reviews of others.

i had an evga 7600gt... fan was not loud @ all... from the looks of it, the style looks similar to the 7900gs fan.

Ah, mines really noisy when you get gaming. which is why its watercooled now.
Im not sure what this is made of though. the fins are copper, and the base? it looks and feels like anodized aluminum heh.
So sen, where are those 7's? you'r supposed to mod the crap out of that card ;P

It's likely because the caps on it suck! Over at badcaps.net, there was a report of a PNY video card having bad caps.
More likely, GSC caps.

The caps that I saw on eVGAs don't suck. eVGA seems to use quality caps, but I would watch out for the fan.
The fan on my eVGA GeForce 4 Ti 4200 64 MB has a tendency to moan, click or rattle, but only sometimes and usually only when just starting it up.
It's more likely to do that when the temp is low. The fan seems to have an issue with low temps. :(

Ran a 3Dmark with Rivatuner jacking her to 650/1800 and I thought she was going to blow again. Locked up once and artifacts everywhere. Switched back to NVIDA control and ran it 630/1650 for this score. Not bad.

That card is probably a dog BECAUSE it is PNY. I've seen my share of crappy components and dodgy SMT soldering jobs, most of them on PNY products. I stay far away from PNY. A few higher end 6800's used Oscon caps, but the rest I had no clue. Probably OST.

Yea I think I'm gonna wind up taking both of them back due to my dissapointment in their ability to clock to an even average level. Havent decided if ill get the XFX 600/1650 or just pick up a BFG here locally.

The caps on this card are solid, the previous one was using chineese/taiwaneese but this one I am using now is using Rubicon which is the best you can buy.

i think u hit up the wrong thread... you should create a thread about your concern here:
http://www.ocforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86

or first use the search option found here:
http://www.ocforums.com/search.php

if you can't find anything searching, then create a new thread appropriately.

My eVGA 7900GS can be had for $139 after a $15 rebate and mine is kicking ass! After I had my eVGA 6600GT which lasted a good 2 years, I will always go eVGA. They now have lifetime warranty as long as you register and unlike PNY, it's "Lifetime warranty" does not mean 3 years, it means lifetime.

After autoclocking using Ati-tool, it ended up giving me 582MHz Core and 840MHz Memory.
This card came stock at 500/690 ! The stock stock stock 7900GS comes at 490/560 I believe.
So right now I have a 92MHz OC on the core and 290MHz OC on the memory
