as you can see its a bit spendy but it can make geodes as smooth as glass ( im into geology a bit too) so i was thinking that it could polish heat sinks and waterblocks too.

I was just wondering if anyone else has thought of this or tried it.
Here is one place I found (http://www.accountwizard.com/clients/shop.asp?Web=rocks4u&AW_SessionID=AWEngine2001000020541603851518511e51d 851kId1d51e851kSite7E47d147k&page=class&class=48&subclass=53)

I have one of those but its made for bolishing brass for shells

it would polish thim up really nice but the purpose of lapping is to get the bottom as flat as posible not just making it smooth so I dont think it would realy do a good job of that

well i have a geode right here and its completly flat up to glass and is that smooth the only problem I could think of is if it got lop sided

I've always had good luck with heatsinks and cold plates so I haven't had to flatten anything....supposedly the blorb is a concave piece of crap for needing to be lapped but I checked mine with an engineering rule and it was flat as flat can be. Makes me wonder how long my luck will last. Have you guys really ever had to put much work into this? As for lapping cores, I think that's a bunch of bunk. They're flat enough to begin with and besides this, goop will fill the cracks anyway and it's just as good as it being flat anyway.

edit-a surface grinder will flatten anything beyond your wildest expectations

well i agree on the lapping of the core i would think that it would already be perfectly flat just small inperfections. but some heat sinks can be pretty rough on the bottom

lapping isnt hard at all if you have
glass $2
wet and dry sandpaper $5
and some time (30 mins)

you can get that thing looking polished and super flat in no time..

i would imagine so this would be handy if you already had one or know someone who did.

Goop 0.5-8W/m-K vs Al 200+ and copper 400 W/m-K... hmm I think it does make a difference being flat you know :)
On the other hand bad lapping is worse than none, esp if you do both sides, two convex surfaces make a really bad fit.

Oh yeah, obviously the metal's going to conduct far better than some paste, I meant that there will always be cracks and pits even to a microscopic degree so.....ahhh nevermind maybe I'm just lazy.:p
