I've tried now on two machines with a whole assortment of hardware but I have not yet been able to get Win2000 to finish installing. It always has a hardware failure BSOD. I've tried playing with BIOS and taking all of the cards out, but with no luck. Will someone please give me a direction to try, as I am at a dead end. Thanks

Did you try to install overclocked? If so this could be the problem. Try to install non overclocked and see if it works.

good.........what kind of mobo you have ?

what kind of error message you receive?

I found i got errors if p'n'p os was enabled in bios, try disabling it.

Also are you using an origanal copy of win2k (not a backup copy of the disc), and are you using the boot disks or the cd to boot to?

Hmmm . . . for some reason, my reply didn't show up . . . tres strange . . .

I would try using another CD and or bootdisks. Or, if you can boot off of the CD, do that.

I have a shuttle AK31 rev 3.1 and a MSI K7t Pro-2A (in sig). I boot from a 98 startup disk then format the dirve in DOS. The setup allways fails after it restarts fot the first time and then tries to run windows for the first time. BTW all the files copy fine(no errors). If I install win98 first and then upgrade it fails at the point where it detects the hardware.

Its a copy, I'll try and get another copy. I tried turning p'n'p off after I got the error the first time but it might have been too late to make a differnce. I boot with a 98 startup disk then run winnt in the i386 folder on the 2000 disk.

Try getting the 2000 bootdisks..

from http://www.bootdisk.com/

Maybe the run from the winnt folder is not meant to be ran from dos and should be ran from supported drivers from the bootdisks...

I GOT THE SOLUTION FOR YOU................ARE YOU HAPPY

so it fails at hardware detection.......for curiosity, you use DEFAULT setting in BIOS ?..........if not, try to use the default to see if you encounter the problem....................you have 2 choices

1- when w2k setup is running at hardware detection, it will create the file (setup something.txt or .log)which tells you what devices cause it stop..................try to look for this file................in windows setup procedure, there is a command you can tell windows to pass the hardware problem...........i forget this command..........and hopefully somebody out there give you this command.........or try to search it at microsoft for this command...........when you get this command ,your problem is solved........TRY TO USE this command at the BEGINNING OF SETUP

2- if above things FAILs.............................get a new mobo if you want to spend................

if your w98 runs fine, you shouldn't have any problem with w2k

Try going for the lastest bios update.

Congrats on the new mobo, I've heard good things about it although I don't have one.

On to the problems:

First, I had a problem with 2 of my older machines where the install would SEEM to lock up- in fact it was continuing just fine (!?). Took about five minutes to release everything and keep going. My best guess is that the os was configuring all the hardware where it wanted to be (irq/dma/mem. address etc.) So giving it a good long wait may be the solution.

Second: Win2K is VERY sensitive to hardware stability: you have run Win98 on it, which is NOT sensitive (it'll run and crash instead!) Have you run any diagnostics/ burn in loops to check Win98 stability?

Win2k can take some work to install- my old duallie as an example, but it is WELL worth it!

Good luck

try to use "UPGRADE ADVISOR" before isntalling w2k or winxp

you will know which of your hardware cause problem
