ok for a while now I have touted how stable my dell system was... well this morning it crashed on boot up 15+ times in a row before I could use it then it crashed many times forcing a reboot or hitting the enter key to clear the BSOD -.... it has NEVER been remotly this bad before! what is going on - is it posible to have a room too cold that the HD has issues? - the HD was clicking like mad!!!

this actually scared me cuase that is my main rig and have TONS of vital info on it.... *gonna back up tonight*

Is it still under warrantee? If it is then get on Dell's butt to fix it. :D Seriously, that kind of sounds like hard drive problems to me; be sure to back up all your important data. I've heard that Dell has been using some IBM drives in their boxes lately and you might have a 75GXP about to die. When 1 of my 75GXP's started to die, it would click like crazy for a while and then would start to work. It finally went totally dead last week and fubarred my raid stripe. At least I had most of my important stuff backed up on tape.

If your hard drive is going south it can cause problems with any/every device you have.

Think about it, drivers are stored on the hard drive, if it can't read those drivers properly...bang...that device doesn't work properly.

Clicking coming from a hard drive is not a good thing.

It is actually my mother's rig - I told her and that I would get a new HD for her and now she is upset taht she can't afford a new computer...

I SAID IT WAS TH EHD AND I WOULD BUY IT!!!! I hate when people don't listen!!

Now the next problem..... How screwed am I with it being a DELL rig? as far as drivers and stuff?

If I goast a new drive ... I think would be easiest. Do I install as a slave then goast then set to master?

How do I do that?

I do have a legal copy of Norton Goast that came with my EPOX mobo.....

I believe that .vxd is not video but virtual drivers. If your Hard Drive is clicking then it is definately dead. Trust me, I had lots of em die. Either way get Dell on the phone to fix it, which means that you will probably send it out for repairs, and you will be 3 weeks without a pc, but at least it will be fixed. I hear Dell is good like that. Best of luck.

Its definitly the HDD..

The clicking from the hdd means the rotations are wacked.. thus making it run like a slow turtle or dead..

So send that thing back to Dell as fast as you can then get it fixed..

The hard drive is a crucial things to other hardware.. since it won't be able to read so.. :)

bad news - lost on of my 40G HDs to try to restore my Dell and I bought another 40Gig Seagate to takes its place....

I work for dell and I get so many bad hard drive calls. I swear dell uses crap. I would not reffer anyone to dell.

Norton Goast - it creates the image file great but won't let me write that image to my second hard drive....
