Ok, I had a panic attack. I saw memory prices going up and put an order in for 256 stick of pc2100(Crucial) for a pc I hope I can afford in the near future:confused: I was thinking of a Duron on a ECS or Shuttle mainboard. My question is would a Duron make use of DDR memory? I now pause for the abuse I deserve for asking a newbie question;) TIA

First off nobody deserves 'abuse' and it is something that most certainly is not acceptable on these forums, so feel free to ask about anything ( except women, they are like apple mac's.. you know different and scarey :D )

Anyway back to the question... Both the 'Spitfire' and the 'Morgan' Durons can and will happily run on a DDR based mobo and use DDR memory without a problem.

Abuse might have been too strong a word, how about some good natured ribbing:) I haven't seen any designation on the durons I have seen on the different web sites. Is it safe to assume that 800Mhz and above durons are good on DDR?

DURONs will work well on a DDR motherboard, the only thing they give up to a T-BIRD is the amount of cache on the CPU. At the moment I have a DURON 600@1100 (138*8), doing fine on my AD11 with 256MBs PC2100, very fast and extremely stable, running WIN 2K pro.

DDR motherboards increase the bandwidth of the memory, independent of the CPU (the CPU by the way has always been DDR on the DURONS and T-BIRDS).

Good Luck!

Now I just have to pray the wife doesn't get laid off so I can afford to build a new system. If applies guys, Happy Holidays!

Go for it! I love my ECS/Duron/DDR system great bang for the Buck.

Lately, there has been no point in mating ANY AMD CPU with PC133... Plenty of good, fast and stable DDR boards are out there, and a good DDR board with memory costs about the same as a good PC133 board with memory. My roommate has a K7S5A system that I built for him and right now I am running my Shuttle AK31 r3 with a Duron as a folding box - they both perform very well. I have a SLOW 850 MB WD hard drive in my Duron box and it still installs Win98 in less than 20 mins. I'll be moving my Shuttle over to my main box soon, as I'm looking for a bit of an improvement on my frame rate on some of the games I play.

Bottom line, if you're building a box or even just buying a new motherboard, DDR is the way to go now. I have been hesitant in saying it until now but it's the truth now.

I have to agree with SickBoy.

And I would like to add that, with the cost of a top of the line sound card close to $200.00 and a new G Force 3 or equivalent video card pushing $300.00, it doesn't make sense to try to save $20 on the motherboard / memory. This would also give you a viable upgrade path for the near future. I would suggest that you go with the newer technology.

Good Luck!
