so a friend of mine wants to get his mom a nice x-mas present. she is in a band and wants to be able to record vocals, and guitar onto her computer. i was looking around for some answers and came up with this so far:
get Mac OSX and use the garageband feature.

thats it.

the only problem is, how to record the vocals and the guitar. what does he need sound-card and hardware wise.

shes got a run-of-the-mill computer with crappy onboard sound, so obvisouly she would need a new sound card, and an adapter for the Mic and guitar to plug into the card, anything else, or what else would work?

he said she's got a pre-amp. now me not being a audiophile or even know how a guitar and amp works, i have no clue :P, so i need some expertise on the subject.

and i will tell my friend to stay tuned to this thread (as he is a member here HarlanC, but rarely posts)

Whats your budget? Probably the best for under $200 would be the ESI Juli@ (http://www.esi-pro.com/viewProduct.php?pid=43). The Juli@ is really nice, as it allows you to switch between RCA in/out and TRS in/out via a daughter card that plugs into the main card. It keeps the optical and digital coaxial lines separate from the rest of the card, reducing jitter and giving an extremely high sound quality. They can be had for $150 to $175.
