Apparently yesterday when my mother turned her computer on and loaded MSN Explorer, the homepage had been changed. It had been changed to a page that said something about your computer has been hacked click here to fix it...and apparently it had some icky porn on the page too. I gave the lecture to her that 1)She should have written the location/website that the home page was redirected to. and 2) She should have just turned the computer off and used mine until I got home.

Anyway, I'm not entirely sure what happened with the whole homepage, but it wasn't until this morning that I wa told that this had happened...and I was only told because not when you turn the computer off, select shut down. It goes all the way to the screen that says "Windows is Shutting Down" and it just hangs there.

I've run Spy Bot S&D, its got nothing. Did a virus scan (AVG Free). Nothing.I have the hijackthis log attached.

I'm not sure what the problem is and do you guys thing the system is still compromised? Why isn't Windows shutting down?

I'm half tempted to take this opportunity and force my mother to use Ubuntu now. She wouldn't have this problem of possibly being cracked in Ubuntu...at least not yet.

Anyway Thanks guys.

edit:

Now it shuts down, I didn't change anything. But MSN Explorer, which is just IE6 in a new GUI, crashes and IE6 is incredibly sluggish.

Yep, sounds like you got some spyware, though sometimes ive noticed the homepage will change without much issue.

I would get you to first use firefox. That is much less likely to get spyware. Also, take away all of the IE icons... If YOU need to use IE; goto my computer and type in your address bar where the path is up on the top. You will then be in IE.

Next... Follow these steps... There are a few in their that are very important... that even I got caught with. However I knew I had the spyware a moment after I clicked on that file... It was a, ohh I shouldnt of done that.

now... follow these steps

If you follow them really carefully, you should be able to pull off some of this stuff.

After your done... Download HiJack this, and save it to a log... then post it...

Ill tell you what you can disable... I may be able to save you from allot of stuff loading on log-in .

Download MS-Defender, and also find out how to create a limited access account. You can then use these two, so that your mother cant install ANYTHING without you logging into under your account.

Search google for "XP Limited user profile" type stuff for how to do this

I swear I attached the hijackthis log file. I already ran it.

I use firefox but my mom is a stubborn person who can't even change her habits! I have the system pretty slimmed down. Only about 30-35 process that run in total. I'm not doing to use MS-Defender. Spy Bot S&D is just as good if not better and it saves me from installing one more m$ thing...windows is enough for me.

Let me go get the hijack this log file.

Windows Defender has some extra features... Spybot is good, but you cant rely on one. I like Defender because of the advanced features. It includes everything HiJackThis does, plus some.

If you dont want her to use IE, remove all the IE icons...
