I've still got one that won't play games any longer (fracking Sony lasers) but I don't know if it'll play CDs still or not. I may have to give it a try. I SERIOUSLY doubt that it'll sound better than my DVD-player with optical audio outputs though.

I love how they describe it as 'Ancient'. Like it's an Atari 2600 or something

Ugh....I am trying so hard to resist the urge to scream. Completely moronic.

PS1's are sub-par CD players, pure and simple. It's not hard or expensive to get a CD player to output decent sound. Flat response, low distortion, bandwith easily covering the audible spectrum. PS1's really don't even do that...which is probably why idiot subjectivist audiophiles like them. Because it really actually does sound different! (It's worse.) Their audio output circuitry just was too cheaply done. The PS2 was actually a big improvement and sounds pretty much like a CD player should sound like.

It was really great with the part about the one model having the RCA output jacks so that they can use their "audiophile" cables.

I should sell this guy a special "audiophile PS1 stand" that eliminates unwanted vibrations and stray electromagnetic fields to improve performance for an outrageous amount of money.

Heheh....oh, and they sound best when you leave them on all the time.....HAHAHAHA....

"Before I started my listening tests, Michael had a warning for me: "Plug in the units — turn ‘em on — and don’t turn them off." It seems the PlayStations sound best when left on all the time. Michael was right. You shouldn’t even listen for the first three days. Both units need every second of the break-in period."

Apparently it takes three days for the self-induced brainwashing to sink in.

Wow...the power supply in that thing is amazing overkill.

My PS one would stop running if I left it on too long and I had to flip the thing upside down to read disks. I'm sure it's a "great" hi-fi player. NOT!

That's what happened to al of mine. The 3rd one which is the one I still have, doesn't play games any longer unless upside down.

I tend to agree with the PS2 assertion as it has an optical out.

i think the articles funny.

there are lots of Playstations out there for cheap but the best one is the one with seperate audio jacks!

the 1001 is THE HARDEST TO FIND!

and its doesent really matter in the long run if you have seperate jacks or not because the combo plug has the same connectors just MALE on a CORD with a VIDEO PLUG you DONT NEED TO USE.

and i still dont understand why you guys have so many problem with lasers and your sony products, i DID have to have mine fixed but only because i threw it across the room

Okay, I'm calming down, now.....heh.

I had two PS1's...the lasers eventually went bad in both of those after about 2 years of use.

I suspect that PS1 read errors and lasers going bad frequently might have been partly due to the open air walkman style design. It's just asking for random floating dust, dirt, and finger prints....along with people pushing in their disks too hard in the wrong places. A design like that just isn't going to last forever if you actually use it.

....yet another reason that these would make a cruddy CD audio player. You're lucky if the thing even reads the data on the disk all the time on used one.
