External Drives For Laptop

I'm gonna trade in my computer (Duron 850, 40 GB hard drive, etc.) for my dad's old laptop (it'd be more useful at college). However, it only has like an 8-10 GB hard drive, if that. Due to the fact that I have a large collection of CD's as MP3s and many DVD rips on my computer (didn't want to bring all my CDs/DVDs to college), I need to get an external hard drive. What would be the best way to do this? USB, FireWire, parallel? I'm going to guess FireWire is the way to go, so does anyone have any recommendations on a PCMCIA FireWire adapter and a FireWire external HD? Thanks.

Don't bother with an external, just buy a new larger one to replace the old one. It would be cheaper too.
