does the orientation of the pump effect its preformance in any way?
The way Arca_ex has his pump mounted is really less than ideal. Not that it can't work, but it is better to have the inlet facing either sideways or up fed from above to ensure a ready supply of water.
Orientation makes no difference in performance as we are working with closed loops.

Just as long as the inlet isn't pointing down you're good to go!
