View Full Version : Borging the new Dual Core2... What's the best way?

Soon I'll be buying a new laptop with that new CORE2 processor. Because it's Intel I assume it has hyperthreading so for folding purposes that means it can fold 4 instances at once right?
So should I Fold 4 at a time or just 2? And how would I do that?

no, core2duo doesn't have hyperthread support. your best bet is to fold 2 instance at the same time. (that is until Stanford debut a SMP client for Windows) just use Wedo's (awesome) OneClick and since it's a laptop, be sure to edit the config file to set battery=yes.
Core 2 are 2 cores, no hyperthreading. So you should run 2 instances.
Just download the console, put it in 2 different directories/folder and make sure that you set machineid=1 on one of them and machineid=2 in the other.
You are prompted for Machineid only if you answer yes to "change advanced options" prompt when you run the console from the secktop the first time. It defaults to 1 so you only need to set it when you run the second instance.
Alternatievly, if you want to run them as services as Gary suggested, it is easy to use wedo's 1-click found in the welcome sticky. Just follow the instructions found there and pick the version for dually/ht which will set up 2 instances. Don't forget to edit the client.cfg files (carefully, and NOT with WORDPAD!) for each instance to put your own stanford id in each of them ... although i am sure wedo wouldn't mind the royalties if you don't :D

Landshark, so if I edit the file for Battery=yes It won't fold when I'm using the battery correct? It's such a pain in the butt to shut off F@H through the services administrator when I'm on a plane or something.
pscout, I usually use NOTEPAD when editing the config files using WEDO's One-Click... Works great...but wordpad, I dont even know what that is?

yup. set battery=yes, it will not fold when your are running on battery and will fold again when you plugged in.

When indoors and not on the move, try not to fold whilst on mains power with the battery in. It'll destroy the battery, the constant part drain/ part charge will cause havoc!!
Seriously, if your gonna fold on a laptop, use main and take the battery out.
/2p worth.

OOOoooooohhh.... Now I know why all my batteries didnt last long...LOL
My laptop (which I'm typing on right now) has a battery that failed after about 5 months. It now only holds a charge for about 8-10 minutes.

Not to thread hyjack.
Question: Is there a difference in performace of the core2duo 2M vs. 4M L2 cache? (above and beyond MHz) ?
I see that intel is going to be releasing e6320 and e6420 with 4M L2.

the difference is 2-4% on average (peak for one type of benchmark is 10%) for the extra cache.
Can you link to where you hear about a 4mb version of the E63/6400? I googled and got nothing.

Some WU's does exceptioanally well on 4 MB cache ... all the 149x's except the 1498.
In fact, they are so good that if i can get enuf of them i run my 6600's on them instead of SMP. My good 6600's oc'ers will do well over 2000 ppd on 1495/1497.
Problem is that there is not a good enuf supply of those wu's.
Even my presslers were doing over 1000 ppd on them ... presslers having 2mb cache per core vs 1 mb or less for the smithfields and prescotts.
The AMD's luv those wu's too.
Since i limit the number of rigs i run, i build these days with 6600's.
But 2MB C2Ds are probably a bit better overall in terms of $/ppd with the wu mix over time.
the 2MB C2D's also produce as well as the 4MB on current SMP wu's assuming same clocks and memory bandthwidth.
