I was talking to jacobman about this but wanted to ask others.
I was debating on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102629R

Now from what I read the 1800gto linked is the unlockable version. However at 30 dollars difference is it worth it to bother or just get the 1800xt.
This will be a hold over card for a while till all dx10 cards are more reasonable and more choices are available.

I am a nvidia guy so know very little about ati.

Also what about a 1950gt how will it stack vs the 1800xt. I see it has only 12 pipes and I am guessing they cannot be unlcoked, but I am guessing the core is newer. Any advice appreciated

Deff the Sapphire, there is even a XTPE bios for it that raises the 3d clocks from stock. I have that card and love it. I have a Viewsonic vx2025wm and it plays all my games at 1680 x 1050 without issue and with good eye candy. However if you don't have a hi res monitor the 1950 might be a better choice.

From what I've heard, all of the HIS X1800GTO's unlock, but I'm not 100% positive. And it it only a $30 price differential and you have little experience with ATI cards I'd just go with the XT. The only reason I got the GTO version because at the time there was a great $60 MIR on it, had a chance to unlock the 4 extra pipes, and the XT was a crapload more.

So just go for the X1800XT. You'll love it :)
