You have been warned! Quadzilla™ is now on the rampage! First glimpse of this larger than life beast, in its formative stages, has been captured here (http://homepage.mac.com/macaholicg5/.Pictures/System%20Builds/Quadzilla™%20Components.JPG)! Last reports have him devouring small GROMACS of p2124 and p2125, as a burn in appetizer, at 734.6ppd. Watch out I think he's headed for the GPU server! What can stop him?! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Quad-core - 25pts x 4
GPU folding - 50pts x 4
Folding Pr0n - 250pts
Sorta goofy post - 50pts
Short and sweet post - 50pts
Out-of-nowhere Blue Oyster Cult reference - 250pts
Total: 900pts
More posts should be like this!
Sweet rig!
It kinda sucks that each GPU folding instance will take 100% of a core :(
If it didn't, the production would be insane. 2400ppd in GPU folding plus maybe 2000ppd in SMP folding. I'm sure your power company is wringing its hands in anticipation.

WAS less expensive. Cinderella's coach is about to change (http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2006/11/23/icc_limits_amerens_delivery_rate_increase_request) . Along with my farm and production. I pick up the entire 6000+ kWh tab each month. No borgs to rely on. I'll probably pick a few favorite rigs to continue doing some testing and reporting for the Pande Group, but that will be it. Yea, farming is getting pricey-er...here's a peek (http://www.geocities.com/hrsetrdr/OC_forums/DecBill.JPG) at my last Edison statement. Of course, my wife tore that open just as soon as she pulled it out of the mailbox. I've admitted to knowledge that the portion of the bill eaten up by the folding farm to be "about" $150; more like $175 if using Edison's Energy Estimator (https://www.sce.com/forms/ApplianceEnergyEstimator.aspx). In January I'm going to take advantage of California's Go Solar (http://www.gosolarcalifornia.ca.gov/news/program_updates/index.html) program. Wind generation is also an option. What ISN'T an option is doing nothing...looking down the road aways towards retirement, my wife and I won't have much of a house payment, but by then the electric bill(without folding) will exceed what our present mortgage pmt is, if nothing's done.
In January I'm going to take advantage of California's Go Solar (http://www.gosolarcalifornia.ca.gov/news/program_updates/index.html) program. Wind generation is also an option.
Like to exercise? Make a little pedal-generator. when you're not busy or just want some exercise, hop on the bike and run the meter backwards.
You could always make your own windmill, here's a good refernce site. you just might get addicted. I know I'm going to make a pedal power generator in the comming months. (my off semester for school).

for between 5 and 10 Amps DC like it says. taking endurance into mind, it seems that you can harvest all the energy of a cordless drill battery or two in a whole hour. which is alot of work when youre talking about the human power equivalent.
or maybe one or two of these UPS batteries http://www.batterywholesale.com/battery-store/proddetail.html?prodID=374
now figure you get 80% of that back at the wall on a good day and you see its a good way to stay healthy, but not a good way to power your clock radio, unless you have a team of monkeys peadaling (still gotta feed em) or your roomate is known for wearing yellow, and doing lots of riding in france.
taking the human body, which is unbelievably efficient, and throwing it at a lossy mechanical generator, and more through a lossy charger and then MORE through a lossy inverter...
you then understand why an hour of my labor is worth TWICE what i pay -per day- to buy the stuff i use from the city. in other words i would rather not spend an hour peadaling, but a half hour or so at work a day to be able to buy it without having to build or ride anything, and i make ...not much.
Just gotta be realistic about how much things are worth on your time.
just an idea :)
plus, that example there, if you read through it all the way (not just skimmed) was thrown together in about 2 hours total....I'm not talking about running through an inverter or anything like that, but more like through a grid-tie...because to charge a battery bank, you would need way more up front cost....and it would be rather stupid with pedal power only....so yeah.
if you've got the time and the energy, heck, why not run the meter backwards for a little while.

it is not actually "using" %100, it just reports it that way, it is simply polling the cpu for info, but not sucking all it's power.
you can fold and gpu fold, but if you got dual core i think they suggest leaving one core not folding.

Thanks for the links, dz_jad. :) I'm afraid that I may need alot more cogeneration capicty though, since my electric usage is at 2.7kw/hr. The do-it-youself windmill looks like a cool project, however. Part of what my aim is, is to go with a co-gen project that can meet the specifications necessary to recieve the State's incentive's, as well as any Federal Energy credits that may apply.

I missed the underlying message initially, until I took a look at your "cb" stats; so it really is moindre est meilleur?
I am guessing that if the mobo will support all 4 gpus at decent pci-e speeds then a quad might have enuf left to run at least 1 and maybe 2 cpu instances.
I am getting closer to tackling a similar project on the p5w64 pro but with only a dual core, not a quad
From what i have read tho, I think the p5w64 will only run 3 gpu's at 8x speeds since it only has 24 lanes to work with. According to the doc there is no 8,8,4,4 config for the 4 pci-e slots, but hopefully Mac will prove me wrong.

From what I have read, the IDT 89HA0324PS PCI Express switch has a x8 connection to the 975X Northbridge and adds two x8 connections to two of the four PCI-E slots. That would bring the total PCI-E lanes on the motherboard to 30. Supposedly these 30 PCI-E lanes are split into x8 x8 x4 x8 among the four slots with two PCI-E lanes taken up by the onboard LAN. We'll both know for sure how that pans out for GPU folding soon enough.

I think people tend to spend roughly the same proportion of their income( a broad generalization) in the various areas of spending, regardless of their income level. As an example, if a person makes $20,000 a year they spend $x on entertainment, transportation, housing and "toys". If a person earns $100,000 a year they are (in general) going to spend $5x in the areas of entertainment, transportation, housing and "toys".

hmm...interesting....I think there are many categories of people. Up until recently, I never bought anything. Always saved my money. The only things I own are my beat up truck that barely runs ($500) and my computer (soon to be multiple), soon to be a Benelli shotgun along with that.
If I hadn't been reading the forums recently, I sure wouldnt be spending the $250 I just dropped for a folding graphics card and the money upgrading and getting a second rig. I'd be saving every penny....
Sleepy_Steve
12-20-06, 07:02 PM
LOL ^ so every penny you dont spend is saved? That seems to go along with my impression of how money tends to work in general.
I too was frugal for a long time... I used to only save, then i was really only spending for my comps, then i got a car and i was spending for a car and PCs... Then i got a girfriend and now im nearly broke
But honestly, i dont really worry about other peoples situations... im sure if mac can afford all that in discressionary income, he can afford the power bill, and his kids have shoes and other things to keep the acid rain off thier backs.

Yea, basically what I was referring to is "disposable income" ie: money that doesn't go for essential items like the gas, water and phone bill, mortgage/rent etc. The tendancy is, is the more your income is, so too is the amount of your "disposable income" that will be spent on items that are "optional" like fancy automobiles, high-end computers and such. Of course, there are some people save every penny even with a 100k income; others spend like there's no tomorrow on a 20k income.
Myself, I spend alot on 'goodies' simply because I can afford it...right now. 10 years from now, I'm hoping to retire, so there probably won't be very many $250+ video cards in the picture for me. :)

Disposable income! Woot.... need some of that. Got to have priorities.
Everyone has hobbies, some have more than one. I don't sit in bar, don't go clubbing, don't smoke, don't do drugs. I have 3 pairs of shoes and I'm not a clothes horse. I am a gear-head and a hardcore folder.

hold up, hold up - money and percentages arent really what you think they are here, easy with that stuff now - there is something more important to consider, right? obviously if money were more important than folding, we would all be a bunch of non-folders with better bank accounts
in other words plenty of us are willing to trade our hard earned dollars for folding.
lets talk not about MAC, but quadzilla. my Quadzilla theory has it that we have just entered days where a superbox beats a folding farm.
1. this is a less-than-killowatt PSU, and has reasonable efficiency.
how many of you could ballpark 3200ppd per killowatt at the plug? maybe its common now adays and i just havnt noticed, but it sounds to me that this is leading by a good example, not lobbing Godzillabucks over peaples heads.
2. okay so production per killowatt has just had a giant leap in folding - but so what? the cost of entry is SO high that no mortalzilla could afford it-
Lookie here (http://www.hkepc.com/bbs/itnews.php?tid=714230&starttime=0&endtime=0) Mainstream quadcores next july. dont adjust your set i said Mainstream Quadcores Next July ...youll probably be able to get one for $550 or so in mid to late august. all youll need is a quad ready board and some hefty ram, and a nice high efficiency power supply - and you too can have your own superboxen, just like Mac's - but far more affordable in the short AND long term.
Wellcome to the new age of the superboxen.
watch prices fall on this stuff and watch people selling their farms to get a superbox. the price will only get more right over time.

Those are likely the highest numbers you will see coming from Quadzilla™. PFFFFFFT! zim01! He can't even figure out how to sell his worthless PlayStation 3 on eBay! First it got pulled for not meeting their listing criteria. Then he had it listed for a buy it now price of 400$! Then he pulled it to up the price to 595$! Then it got pulled again completely! Poor zim01. Yeah, I'd trust HIS numbers every day! Is he a CPA?! No wonder you left him behind with the [H]orde marty pants. ;)

Yeah, its too bad they come out shoeless... I belive we use the baby blankets as some sort of containment field. I doubt that shoes would do any good when they come out anyway... What with the lack of fully formed bones in the feet and such.
Does this count as an extra layer to the farm??

well, as of about 4 horus ago i lost my dual core 3.2 pressy rig, sold it :d
and also runnign F@H on servers i remeber why i could before, it seems for some reason MySQL doesnt like it, we use a web server that connect usign Apache to a MySQL DB and when F@H is running, one or 2 on a dual cpu rig, often reports and such time out and dont show any info :(
so doesnt look like any major points from me, my 3.2ghz sytem on a good day pooped out maybe 300-700 if i didnt use it, and it had an x1900 XT, whiched i used now and then, so all that is gone for now, but sure i will make it up some how (got o build a new dual core for my uncles, so there is maybe some if he lets me :))

Just an update. Let's see. 2GB Corsair Twin2X - check. Two virtual machines loaded with SMP client - check. Not too bad for frame times; p3027 8min 30sec and p3025 8min 18sec. Now to just find the time to mess around loading up all 4 GPU clients. So much to do, so little time to do it. <SIGH> As for task manager, it shows CPU Usage hovering around 80-85% with each vmware-vmx.exe taking up even amounts at 40% (488,770K and 387,212K).

VM memory usage will reduce with time as the VMware Virtual Server swaps out unused portions of memory.
Kinda funny, I've got one VM box with ~ 18 different machines on it- I've seen the machines as low as ~ 10 meg a machine! All the same OS so I think the VM software "shares" the same parts of all machines to reduce total overhead.

It's a quad core

I know it's a quad core.
If 2200 PPD is at 2.66 , should result at 2500-2800 PPD 3.0-3.2 overclocked

2.66GHz. That would be RC'd. For now... ;)
