I found out last night that one of the main sources of heat in my case was the PSU.....

So I stripped it down and had a look.

1 rubbishy fan, and very poor inlet holes at the back.

Needed more airflow through it, thought I......

I remember seeing an article (might have been on the OC.com front page, or elsewhere) about replacing the PSU cover with wire mesh. Righty Ho!

Having recently built a cage for my two chipmunks, wire mesh is one thing I have plenty of........

Final result: 4 degrees C drop in case temp, and 4 degrees C drop in CPU temp......

WARNING: Your PSU is very dangerous. If you have no clue what you're doing - don't do it!

My 400Watt PSU (variaing fan speed dpendent on temp) never even gets warm, not suprising though as I have over 400CFM going through my case....

It only makes a difference as your PSU is near your CPU, mines way away!!! THe cable barely makes it to the boards power connector the case is so big!!!!!

That looks neat but kind of dangerous! *Looks over at his PSU case, "Do not remove this power supply cover under any circumstances."

I've actaully was cleaning the dust in my PSU and I had my hand on one of those capacitators and I turned it on and I got shocked happened to me many times !

Dangerous, that can KILL:eek: you.

But then again I stick my hand in a lightbulb thing touching both things, and flew across the room....ahum!

Yea that is a sweet mod there. I saw one article that they used a plastic covered wire mesh, the plastic was colored. Looked hella awesome!~!

You can buy a can of Plasti-Dip from a good hardware store. Comes in a couple of different colors and can be brushed onto the item you want. The easiest way I'd say to coat the wire mesh, it to first, cut the mesh and fit it to the PSU to make sure everything lines up correctly. Then flatten the mesh, and use a large shallow pan to dip the mesh in. It only takes a couple of seconds to have a nice thin durable layer of the Plasti-Dip on the mesh. Then just go ahead and reform your mesh PSU "case" and mount.

Here's my dual psu mod. Didn't feel like puting up 100+ for a 120 watter, so I joined two together, added a relay to start with the system, and mounted it in the box with fans on the cover.

Cool, be VERY:eek: careful when in your PSU even if its been off for like 6 months, few people know that you could quite easily kill yourself:eek: playing with these.

Its a fact so be careful, that would be one way to go. Cause of death: Overclocking...

Looks nice, but it might not cool as well.. The holes in the PSU case are in a straight line across from the fan -> heatsinks, so the air gets pulled across the heatsinks.. A mod like that would let the air come from anywhere.. It might cool the PC case down better, but I would think the PSU actually might run hotter.

I opened mine up & replaced the stock fan with a 50CFM one.. Now cold air blows out the back of it. (didn't change the PSU case)
