I am looking to get back into RTS with one of these games. I am looking for a good single player skirmish, but more importantly a good game to play with my brother and a few friends over Hamachi or LAN.
Thanks
I myself would say go for the most complete and fun of the 3, which would be Company of Heroes. The only problem is that you will need a decent computer to be able to play it at respectable settings. Besides that though, it is a blast to play. AOE3 is decently fun, but at the same time seems to be a bit lacking. And Medival Total War just is not as fun as I thought when it comes to multiplayer.

What about Starcraft: Broodwar?
If we are talking about some other great games, I would definatly suggest Command and Conquer: Generals, My brother and I love to play that game. Also Star Wars: Empire at War.

AOE3 is appalling, unless you get it second hand in the <$10 price range, I strongly suggest that you steer clear of it.
Company of Heroes is great fun, and looks amazing but it lacks depth and is something of a TA: Kingdoms to Dawn of War's TA i.e. it doesn't feel quite right, and the setting doesn't quite fit the style of gameplay. However there is a cheap version that comes bundled with Dawn of War which is a more worthwhile purchase.
Medieval 2: Total War just blew me away, it has more depth and detail than almost any other game in any genre. The campaign mode hasn't changed much since Rome (though Rome was so good that this is no bad thing), but the RTS battles have been tweaked havily and are now much prettier and more satisfying.

I didn't like AOE3 as much as The Kings and The Conquerors. I haven't liked any of the Ensemble Studios 3D games. Age of Mythology absolutely SUCKED compared to Warcraft III. I mean it was basically a no-contest. And AOE3 just doesn't measure up to any of the other, better 3D RTS games.
AOE2 for PSP is actually better than AOE3 on PC. It's realistic and all, but somehow not as compelling.
Medieval 2 is really really good !

I picked up Medieval 2 my self not too long ago. The game overall is GREAT! The single player is hands down the best part of the game, the range of units you can use is also amazing. Best RTS I have ever played.

CoH hands down. It is easy to get into the game but still requires some skill.

I would say Company of Heroes has a great campaign along with a good multiplayer. My next choice would be AoE3 but definitely go with CoH first and foremost.

I agree. Excellent game play, graphics, etc...
Been playing it for about 2 weeks now and its one of the best RTS's I've played in a very long time

They are my awnser to starcraft. I love them. Just picked up the dark crusade stand alone/expansion a couple weeks ago. 2 new races and new campaign. The origonal game and winter assualt can be had for 20$ i think and dark crusade for 20-30 i think.

company of heros is basically the same game as dawn of war, except in world war two settings, with a slightly tweaked resource and infantry system. still great fun though :)
dawn of war's greatest flaw is that it is horribly imbalanced between sides. Necrons are almost unstoppable, while imperial guard is utterly crushed. whatever, its still fun.
starcraft is a great classic game, cant go wrong there.

CoH
Im gunna disagree with HonersStondnt there, CoH relies a LOT more on tactics over Dawn of War
Dawn of War is whoever has the most wins, in CoH, even if you have more, if you get supressed, its all over
Great Fun, Great Graphics, Great Buy

Personally, CoH is the best overall of the 3 games.

Since those 3 games all totally disappointed me, i wouldn't quite recommand any. Go with Wc3 Frozen Throne...
But since you asked, in my own humble opinion the lesser evil would be CoH.

I'm gonna pick up Total War once I have the PC to handle it, the demo barely chugged by on my system at the settings I wanted to play it at. I grabbed the CoH demo but they stick you on Normandy beach for a training mission! I was so annoyed that I haven't even considered getting the full game. Then again, Supreme Commander will be coming along soon and will have my complete attention, the beta is simply awesome! There's nothing like nuking the enemy base into oblivion. :D
All my friends say Medieval 2 is great, but nothing tops Starcraft IMO.

Generals was OK, wasn't total justice to the C&C Series though.
Star Wars: Empire at War has a few multi player/skrimish type modes which can be great and by now theres probably more then enough mods out there to make it even more intresting. I quiet enjoyed this game but the land battles where lacking, space battles where the best!
AOE III: its half way decent, I've spent countless hours playing it but it is lacking options sometimes. AI isn't totally smart but it can put up a fight for a while.
If looking for games coming out though, you got Supreme Commander coming out shortly (sounds like a very soon release), C&C 3 (looking forward to this one) coming in march if not mistaken, and theres 1 other that I know of that you should keep an eye out for if not mistaken early this year as well.

Medieval 2 total war is not an RTS as you don't gather resources and fight the battle on the battle map on the same time. But it was the best strategy game I have ever played. BB has them for $25 (last time during sale) making it very very valuable game.
