I need:
External
USB 2.0 at least. 1394 or ESATA nice but not mandatory
Powered by USB
40GB or greater
Compact yet durable
Reasonable cost
Will be used in a work environment, low bandwidth needs. I have no clue on external hard drives, so I need some help picking one out.
I just took a HD out of an old laptop I had sitting around and bought a 2.5" external enclosure. USB 2.0 support, works fine for what I need and is small enough that I just toss it in my bag and carry around with my laptop all the time.
I have seen some of the newer WD 2.5" external drives and they look really nice too. I don't really think finding something to meet your basic requirements will be all that tough.

My old lappy died on me, was v.old and when I first got it I put a new 2.5" drive in it, so when it died, I thought . . . for a bit, and bought a usb to 2.5" adapter cable off ebay, cost about 3 quid. Just got to make an enclosure for it. Alternativley you can get external enclosures that are usb ready for about 7/8 quid off ebay. If you want something really durable its prob best to make your own:)
