View Full Version : Frame rate drop from 800X600 to 1024X768 is significant...

I just bought a 19" monitor and I set my desktop resolution at 1024X768 16 bit. With my previous 17 incher I was running at 800X600 16 bit in desktop and games. I tried some Q3 and UT with my 19 incher at 1024X768 ingame res. and my framerates have dropped A LOT!:eh?: My gaming use to be very fluid in 600X800 but now it sucks. I have a G3 Ti/500 and an 1.2 T-bird and I have to still game in 600X800 mode for smooth game play with my 19 incher. Is it normal to have such a high loss in performance?? I've been checking out some video card reviews and by looking at the benchies, I'd say this is not normal.
Anybody have any comments, suggestions or ideas?
Thanks

frame rate should drop but if youd ask me about how much to expect using 16 bit and your setup from the resolution change id answer you "almost nothing". i must be wrong but i beleive you should be able to play both fine using 1024 and 16bit. nothing else seems to be wrong otherwise, right?
isnt the refresh rate for 1024x768 set too low? even if vert sync is not enabled, if refresh rate is too low the monitor will fail to show the img rendering smoothly. all i can suggest you is this, look at the 1024x768 refresh rate setting and be sure it is set to as high as its possible.
good luclk.

It definitely souns like you've enabled Wait for Vertical Sync. Do try enabled it and changing your refresh rate. You may even want to try different drivers for your card

is it just me but with a geforce3, and 16 bit color, shouldnt any game run smoothly? i would try upgrading drivers, and turning off v-sync, also play at 32 bit color, trust me, your card can handle it...

I just got a Visiontek Geforce3 Ti500 this afternoon (it finally arrived:D ) and I tried Quake 3 demo 001 at 1024X768 with trilinear filtering & 32 bit color and got 151.9 fps. That is installed on my P3 machine, not my t-bird box. That is using the 21.85 drivers that came with the card and not overclocking, by the way. It sounds to me like something is wrong if your gameplay is jerky, you should have comparable frame rates to me I would think at least. You might try some different drivers or something.

1024?????

I have 1280/1024 on my 17inch!!!!

Wif a Ti500 everything should run real smooth @ even 1600/1200, heck even a g2mx can do 1280/1024.

DIsable V/Sync (enables V-d Card to do more FPS than your refresh rate for games so it RRate is 75hz frame rate won't be limited to 75 or try dissabling it, (slower though/3dMark2K1???) or try the option render frames ahead.....

I'm tired...catch ya laterzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Hey thanks for the replies:) My vertical sync has been off. MY refresh rate is at 85Hz. I've been using RivaTuner for my tweaking.
I tried a few of the newer Det4 drivers in 3DMark2001, but they offered no increase in performance. Unfortunately, the 22.50's won't allow me to begin the Nature test in 3DM2k1. I'll try them again with this new monitor. Who knows, it may be a factor.
One more thing, those of you familiar with Virtual memory tweaking: You think that my setting of 260/260 is too low?
Would that cause periodic stuttoring as well? Also, is checking the "S3TC quality trick" necessary with the newer cards and drivers?
Thanks again:)

We found the problem!!!

NEVER EVER FIDDLE WIF VIRTUAL MEM unless you have less than 128MB Ram, if you do then set the virtual mem to twice as much as your RAM.

If you have more than 128MB (I hope you do!!!!!) then fiddling with it can't make anything faster just leave it.
Also Windows XP is a lot better about using memory so I'd get that if you can!

Try not oc'ing your card, it could be to hot and sometimes oc'ing it slows it down. Compare your 3D Mark scores, alos turn VSync on and off and post your scores.

That's your refresh rates. On your monitor.
You can fix that by going into your GeForce Settings, and you can choose the refresh rate.
