I wanna get a pelter on my 1.2 o/c to around 1.5 watercooled. Ok now heres the problem ive read and read about the pelters and i don't understand how to tell what size to get for the cpu, i mean watts wise. i kinda wanted to go into the tens or the low teens with it but i scared and not sure how to inslate the board any hints will be appracited.

ok you will need atleast a 156watt pelt to get temps that low
172watt pelt would be better though

you may try just watercooling though sense I could get my 1.2 tbird to do 1.5 without any extra cooling besides just a normal watercooling setup and got good temps

I think Colin has some good links about insolating if you still want to go peltier.....
if you do go pelt you will need some kind of bench powersupply to power the thing sense normal computer psu dont put out enough amps

thanks for the info i really would like the subzero temps because i wanna get the most out of my 1.2 and bragging rights:D but you think 172 would be good?

If you want a great article on insulating your board and such after putting the peltier on, go to OCTools.com. They have some awsome pics and great easy to follow articles:) .

thank you, but you guys think that 172 watt peltier is the way to go?

Yes a 172W will be fine.

FWIW, out of a 156, single 172, dual 120s and dual 172s, my best results were with dual 120s.

yea but im just putting another power supply in for the 172... is dual 120 to much?

When sizing a pelt, you need to consider the heat output of your CPU. Don’t forget to include the extra wattage from the gain in speed supercooling will provide and the extra voltage if you are using a volt modded board. The pelt wattage should be close to double the heat from the CPU. With this in mind, over 90 watts from the CPU starts to push the limits of a 172 watt pelt.

The other thing to consider is the future. You will probably buy a faster CPU and need more cooling ability. The new XP chips don’t seem to respond as well to volt modded motherboards. Supercooling seems to be the best way to get another 300 MHz to 400 MHz out of an XP. Dual 120s should provide enough cooling to take future XP chips past 2 GHz.

Perhaps the biggest problem you will face is getting rid of the heat from the pelt and CPU. A radiator like the Big Momma or a hefty bong cooler will be necessary.

I have a water cooling setup with an old heater core as the raditor... my biggest problem will be running the pelts... im just gonna throw another 300 psu in there what do you think about that? i mean i know they won't perform at full speed but they shouldn't be that bad, right?

172 and 120 watt pelts are designed for 24 volts. 12 volts will cut their effeciency in half. My experience with them is the sweet spot is between 18 and 22 volts. If you want to stick with a 12 volt PSU, a 156 watt pelt or one of the 220 watt pelts from Europe would be a better bet. A 156 watt pelt will draw about 11 amps at 12 volts, which a separate 300 watt computer PSU be able to handle.

Ok then if i did get a 156 watta pelt what would my temps be around?? And where caould i get 1? Thanks for the help guys
